I'm soooo tempted to accept this one. I received this game on N64 for Christmas the year it came out. What a terrible game! But I had fun with it, especially multiplayer. I always found it too difficult and the framerate too awful to actually finish. But it's one of those games that I'd still like to finish just to say I did. It looks like it's 17 levels and maybe 6-8 hours long (although I see a longplay on YouTube that's about 3 hours long).

Screw it, I'm gonna try it. But first, Blood Omen...

I'm just about finished with Blood Omen, so I decided to try this one out, just to see what I got myself into. I've played about 1.5 hours so far and have completed the first two episodes (out of five). Before I get into my current thoughts on the game, let me briefly recap my thoughts from what I remember about playing this game back in the '90s:

  • I remember having fun playing it split screen with friends. It was short-lived as Goldeneye and Turok 2 ruled the day as far as FPS games go, but it was a nice diversion for a night or two.
  • I remember it being hard. Really hard.
  • Multiplayer mode aside, I remember it not being very good. At all.

I haven't played multiplayer mode in...years, so I have no idea if it's held up. I'm gonna say no, but that's okay, I don't really care about it at this point.

So what do I think about the game now? Well, the first episode was a JOKE. I barely took any damage and used the snowballs (weakest / default weapon) almost exclusively. I finally had to switch for the episode boss. I know I'm not any better at video games these days, but I thought maybe I had this game wrong in terms of difficulty. And then I started episode two. It seemed like a pretty steep increase in difficulty to me as the snowballs were basically worthless and I had to completely change my battle strategy. Although I didn't die in the episode, I came dangerously close a couple of times before I figured things out and blasted the episode boss with ease. I'm not sure where the remaining episodes will go in terms of difficulty, but perhaps this was the difficulty issue I'm remembering?

Part of the difficulty is that I'm no longer proficient with the N64 analog stick. I will defend that controller for the rest of my days because I thought it was pretty much perfect for the games I played on the console, but I'm struggling with it these days. I suppose I'm used to the larger sticks we have these days or something. I find it very difficult to move in a straight line for some reason.

The game looks decent in terms of graphics (I'm running hi-rez mode with the expansion pack), but the draw distance is laughable (though typical for the era) and the framerate is a little rough. Those don't help when you're struggling with moving / aiming and taking damage like crazy.

Okay, enough about the difficulty and technical issues. The real question is whether or not the game is any good. Surprisingly, I'm having a bit of fun with this one. It's very repetitive and seems lazy overall, especially considering it was made by the same team that made the Turok games. But for some reason I'm enjoying it. The voice-acting is fine, but the lines are used repeatedly (which is another typical issue for the era). It captures the essence of the show in a very primitive way, by today's standards, at least. The weapons are neat and each have two modes of fire (I think), which is interesting.

As long as the difficulty remains in check, I will absolutely finish this game, which is something I never thought I'd say! If you have it sitting around on a shelf somewhere, you should definitely dig it out and give it a shot.

Well, I finally perished in a level. I tried it again and died in the exact same spot. I had full health and 25 armor and I lost all of it in about 60 seconds. The issue is the aliens hit HARD and I can't seem to hit them. I think I'm going to try running past them next time and hope they don't chase me. I'm only about halfway through the game, just trying to weather the storm...

I FINALLY beat that stupid level...on my fourth try!! I have one more level in this episode and then hopefully no more aliens. But I'm sure there will be something even worse :P I've now completed 10 levels out of 17...

I bought the PC version of this game and surprisingly, it works on Windows 7 without any issues (so far). I'm thinking I might switch over to that version since I can aim MUCH better and the framerate isn't an issue. In fact, the game runs super fast...maybe too fast. It's playable, but Imm not sure if it's supposed to be that fast. There's a video on YouTube that runs the same speed, so maybe the port was cleaned up. The other weird thing is the enemies take a lot more damage in the PC version. The turkeys require two snowballs instead of one, which isn't a huge deal. But the freakin' cows, man! They're like damage sponges now. The UI is a little different too and the health meter is such that it seems like each character has their own life, but not sure on that one.

I recorded some gameplay footage of the PC version:

I'm at a crossroads because I don't think I can progress in the N64 version anymore (due to the control and framerate) and I feel like I can roll through the PC version. I'm fine with switching, but not sure if I should replay all of those levels or just use the level skip code to jump to where I was on N64. After pondering this conundrum, I thought I'd poll the community to see if anyone else has ever faced a similar situation?

I'd use a code. But at the same time, it'd be interesting to see how much time it takes compared to the N64 version to get to exactly where you are on that version. I'm guessing it'd be less but not sure if you want to invest that much time again.

Well, unfortunately the level select code only exists on the N64 version :P I feel pretty confident I can roll through the levels now, so my time might be skewed a little bit....but oh well
