I was born in 1977. I have a wife, 2 kids, and a dog. I live in the southern part of the US. This is my gaming history.
Our family got an Atari 2600 in 1983. I remember playing Pac-Man, Frogger, Basketball, Space Invaders, and Defender. I never played the dreaded E.T. game. I also got a mini-tabletop arcade Donkey Kong. I played it until it broke.
We got an Apple II+ in 1984, when I was 7. I remember learning to code in BASIC by reading computer magazines. The games I remember playing during the next couple of years were Karate Champ, One on One (Dr. J vs Larry Bird), Snooper Troops, Secret Agent, and of course, Oregon Trail. When I was a little older I started playing Infocom text adventures. I played Zork I, II, and III. I also played Suspect and The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy.
I saved up my allowance and purchased a NES in 1987 for $79.99. It came with Super Mario Brothers (no light gun or Duck Hunt). I remember playing Ice Climbers, California Games, Tag-Team Wrestling, Baseball Stars, Metroid, Castlevania I and II, Zelda I and II, and Rygar.
I stopped playing games for a while and missed out on the Genesis and SNES.
I purchased a PSX in 1998. I remember friends coming over and playing Tekken 3 for hours on end. I also loved the Spyro games, the Crash games, the Abe's Oddworld Games, Intelligent Qube, and Monster Rancher. Then I purchased Final Fantasy VII and everything changed. I fell in love with the JRPG format and it has been my favorite genre ever since. My girlfriend at the time borrowed the console and never gave it back. I miss that thing.
I purchased a N64 in 1999 just so I could play Mario 64, Zelda Ocarina of Time, and Majora's Mask.
Things happened and I stopped playing games from 2000 until about 2008 when my wife purchased a Wii for me. I really only played Mario Galaxy and Twilight Princess. We had a baby around that time and that drained all extra time away and I went into another gaming hiatus.
I was gifted a used PS3 in 2016 and got the gaming bug again. I started collecting old titles that I never had a chance to play (PS One classics - I had not yet learned about emulation) and whatever games that went on sale on PSN for a deep discount. I am a r/patientgamer which means I don't play new titles (with 2 exceptions) or pay full retail price for any game. I patiently wait for the game to go on sale.
I finally got a decent phone and discovered emulation in early 2017.
My kids surprised me with a PS4 this past Christmas. I had to get Persona 5 and GameStop had a new copy on sale for $29.95. Any free time I had in January and February went to playing and completing that game. It is easily the best game I've ever played. Ever. By a mile.
And there you have it.
