As the year comes to a close, here are the Top 10 games I played (and finished) in 2017. After settling on my Top 10, it became obvious that I really enjoy strategy games! I mean, I knew I did, but I didn't quite expect them to dominate my list (4 out of the 10).

Also, I decided to exclude the following games since they're some of my all time favorites and I've completed them many times:

  • The Guardian Legend
  • Pikmin
  • The Typing of the Dead

Super Mario Odyssey

Quite simply, this is one of the best games I've ever played. Everything about this game is super smooth. The action is fast-paced and it runs like a dream with minimal loading times. The non-motion controls are perfect and the motion controls are mostly avoidable. There's just sooo much to do in the game, namely finding Power Moons through a variety of challenges. At time of this writing, I still haven't logged my completion since I'm going to try and find some more, but I have long since completed the main story.

Myth II: Soulblighter

It's possible this game is skewed by nostalgia, but that's okay! I played the first two Myth games a lot back in the '90s, but I never made it very far in the campaign of this one. If you've never seen the Myth games before, they sort of play like an RTS, but there's absolutely no base-building and instead it's all about tactics. You have a set collection of units for each mission and you have to adapt accordingly. The battles are intense and your screen will likely be a bloody mess by the end. The missions vary wildly and it always seems like you're against overwhelming odds, but figuring them out is part of the fun.

It's a shame this series has been dormant for 15-ish years now and I would LOVE to see a new entry sometime.

Final Fantasy Tactics

I made a really good run at this game about 10 years ago and got allllll the way to the end, but I never managed to finish it for whatever reason. So I started over and ROLLED through it. This is a true classic in the strategy / RPG genre and I'm so glad I finally knocked it out.

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild

Surprisingly, I've only finished a handful of Zelda games over the years, but I immediately jumped into this one when I purchased a Switch. It's a great game with so much to do that it was a bit overwhelming at times. I tend to struggle with games like this since I want to do everything in them, but after 60 or so hours, I can just feel my backlog getting angry with me haha.

StarCraft II: Legacy of the Void

And after a couple of years, I finally installed and played through the final StarCraft II campaign! I thought all three games were fantastic and there really isn't much to say other than if you're an RTS fan, you need to play these.

Rise of the Tomb Raider

I've been playing Tomb Raider games since I purchased the very first one for the Saturn back in the mid '90s. I greatly enjoyed the 2013 reboot and this one is more or less just an extension of the framework it laid down. It's an open world with lots of stealth, shooting, platforming, exploration, puzzle solving, etc.

Mario + Rabbids: Kingdom Battle

This was a pretty cool strategy game that did a great job of mixing the Mario and Rabbids universes. I would've preferred just a straight Mario strategy game since I'm really not up to speed on Rabbids, but oh well. The gameplay was rock solid and it had a nice amount of content. I finished the main campaign and dabbled with some of the challenges, though I found them to be a bit more puzzle-y based for my liking.

Mr. Bones

When I purchased my Saturn in December 1996, it came with a demo disc that had some videos on it, one of which included a clip for Mr. Bones. It was a super short clip, but that, coupled with magazine ads was enough to intrigue me. I finally picked the game up in the early '00s and was immediately turned off by the surprisingly really high difficulty level. I tried playing it a few times over the years, but could never seem to make any real progress. But in 2017, I buckled down and decided to give it a real try. And boy am I glad I did! This is a great and highly unique game that's only available on the Saturn and unlikely to ever appear anywhere else. Aside from one level that was absolutely infuriating, the game wasn't overly difficult as I remembered, though it was a toughie. It's definitely doable with some perseverance and I was even able to pass a couple of levels on my first try!

Odin Sphere: Leifthrasir

A month or so before Odin Sphere released for PlayStation 2, I found a magazine with it on the cover and immediately purchased it. I hadn't heard of the game at the time, but the cover featured the beautiful artwork that the game consists of. I decided to pick it up when it first released and immediately jumped in. I made it almost through the first campaign, but started hitting some walls in terms of difficulty as I struggled with the battle system at times. I ultimately gave up and despite a few tries over the years, I never really made it anywhere. I was really excited when this game was released since they tweaked the battle system and for me, it became a whole lot easier. I rolled through this one and snagged the Platinum trophy!

NieR: Automata

I played the original Nier many years ago and got maybe 10 or so hours into it and just kinda lost interest. From what I remember, it had a lot of interesting ideas, but the world seemed so empty. I initially brushed this one aside since I didn't really enjoy the first one, but boy was I wrong! This felt like a completely different game. The way the story is presented requires you to do a lot of "backtracking" (you'll know what I mean if you play it) and started to wear on me towards the end of my 40+ hours with it. I was going to get all 26 endings, but it started getting tedious, so I opted to call it a day.
