Description

This year I decided to not buy any games, but I attacked my backlog with a burning sword instead. These are the results:

Splatoon 2

In May Splatoon 2 became my most played ever, passing NHL 2001’s record of 300 hours. The best game ever? No doubt the best online shooter I have ever played. 10/10

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild

I hated Open Worlds until I played this game, and now I love them. The freedom, the playfulness, the experimentation, the story… Link is not much of a hero, and even less or a character, but the rest of the game is flawless. 10/10

Forza Horizon 4

You're forgiven if you think this game is about cars and racing, but it's actually about freedom and rewards. You can do whatever you want to and the game still rewards you in a number of ways. If every game did this it would be silly, but it works like a charm in this game. Forza Horizon 4 is the first game I really play just to hang around, do nothing special, drive around and see what’s happening, relax and just have a good time. Just wonderful stuff. 10/10

Mass Effect 2

I don't really like that they have sacrificed the interaction between the teammates to get a more open game with more freedom. I would have preferred a more linear game with more character interactions and conflicts between the characters. Other than that, it’s one of the best games ever. 9/10

Overwatch

In June I switched Splatoon 2 for Overwatch. Almost as good as Splatoon 2, only Salmon Run makes Splatoon 2 the better game really. The characters, action and tactics makes this a great game to play again and again. The addition of Brigitte got all of my patriotic blood pumping. Would have been 10/10 without the loot boxes, now it stays at 9/10.

BioShock Infinite

Much, much better that the two first games, this game really took me by surprise. The balance between action and story is one of the best ever. It was a bit too easy on “normal” so I have to play this again on “hard” to decide if it deserves 10/10 or 9/10.

Horizon Zero Dawn

The only thing original about this game is Aloy. Everything else is just bits and pieces stolen from other games. But it all so masterfully crafted together that it doesn’t matter at all. The game world is not as alive as Hyrule in Breath of the Wild, but the great story, and yes Aloy, make up for that. Just a great game. 9/10

Street Fighter V: Arcade Edition

Street Fighter V is the greediest game I have ever played. This game makes Scrooge McDuck seem like a generous man. If you compare this to Forza Horizon 4, a generous game that rewards you all the time, this game is just plain shameless. Fortunately, the best characters in gaming and solid beginner-friendly gameplay make up for that. 9/10

TowerFall Ascension

The perfect warm-up game when you are co-op-ing and multiplaying with your friends. You can play this for ten minutes or two hours and have a whole lot of fun. It best in four-player versus, but it’s great in co-op too. An absolute must if you are couch-playing with your friends.
9/10

Red Dead Redemption

I hated the older Grand Theft Auto-games, but with Red Dead Redemption 2 on the horizon I realized this summer that I should at least try this. And guess what, I loved it! You can really see where newer games like The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Horizon Zero Dawn has taken a lot of their inspiration from. I really love the everyday life in this game: picking flowers, playing poker, hunting bears in the forest… I'm looking forward to giving Grand Theft Auto V a fair chance in 2019 and playing a lot of Red Dead Redemption 2 too of course. 9/10
