Seventh Annual Completionator Community Top 10

The 2023 Completionator Community Top 10 voting has come to a close and I want to thank everyone who participated in the event this year. Seven years ago we thought it would be fun to come up with our own video game awards that you, the members of the Completionator community, could vote on. Unlike other Game of the Year awards, the games people could vote for were for all games ever, not just those released in 2023. The only rule is the vote had to be for a game the person played in 2023.

This year we had 42 people submit votes (+8 from last year and the most ever!) on 322 different games (+56 from last year). The votes were given point values based on how the games were placed in the person’s stack. So first place received 10 points and tenth placed received 1 point. Any ties were broken by the number of votes the game received. Without further ado, we now reveal the 2023 Completionator Community Top 10!

10 - God of War: Ragnarok

Release Date: 11/29/2022
Number of Owners: 414
Average User Rating: 91%
2023 Completions: 17

Our 10th place game came out late last year so it didn't get a chance to make it on last year's list. The sequel the 2018 God Of War was nominated for Game of the Year at last year's Game Awards and won several categories including Best Action/Adventure game. If you love the God of War series, make sure to check out Ragnarok!

9 - Horizon Forbidden West

Release Date: 2/18/2022
Number of Owners: 170
Average User Rating: 83%
2023 Completions: 10

Another sequel has made it to the list! Horizon Zero Dawn's sequel made it to #9 after only getting one single vote last year. The game is set in a post-apocalyptic version of the Western United States recovering from the aftermath of an extinction event caused by a rogue robot swarm. Horizon Forbidden West was also nominated for Game of the Year last year and nominated for several subcategories but didn't end up winning any awards at the Game Awards last year.

8 - Psychonauts 2

Release Date: 8/25/2021
Number of Owners: 146
Average User Rating: 87%
2023 Completions: 9

So far it's been the list of sequels! This time the second Psychonauts made it to #8. This so happens to be the oldest game on this year's list. This is exactly what makes this list so great, you never know what will land on this list! Several years after the release what was considered a failure in the original Psychonauts, the sequel bounced back with a vengence. It was nominated for Game of the Year back in 2021 but fell short of winning this or any other categories that year.

7 - Hi-Fi Rush

Release Date: 1/25/2023
Number of Owners: 55
Average User Rating: 86%
2023 Completions: 9

Finally our first non-sequel! This rhythm based action game follows self-proclaimed "future rock star" Chai whose music player is accidentally embedded in his chest during experimental cybernetic surgery, allowing him to rhythmically fight and re-perceive the world through environmental synesthesia. The game won Best Audio Design at this year's Game Awards.

6 - Baldur's Gate III

Release Date: 8/3/2023
Number of Owners: 254
Average User Rating: 95%
2023 Completions: 10

The third installment of the Baldur's Gate series landed at number 6 this year. From my perspective, this game has been the most anticipated and most well received game of 2023. Baldur's Gate III was named Game of the Year at the Game Awards this year and also won Best Role Playing Game and Best Multiplayer Game. However, it falls short on a much more important list, the Completionator Top 10. Better luck next year BGIII! This game has the highest Average User Rating of all the games on this list at 95%

5 - Pikmin 4

Release Date: 7/21/2023
Number of Owners: 43
Average User Rating: 89%
2023 Completions: 7

Okay I'm beginning to think game developers need to start making some new IPs as the sequels keep dominating the lists. Anyway #5 this year is Pikmin 4. Pikmin is always a great game full of fun challenges and this newest one is chock full of them. Pikmin 4 won Best Sim/Strategy Game at the Game Awards this year. If you have a Switch, you have to pick this one up.

4 - Marvel's Spider Man 2

Release Date: 10/20/2023
Number of Owners: 54
Average User Rating: 89%
2023 Completions: 17

Our next sequel is another eagerly anticipated title for 2023 Spider Man 2. In this game you follow Peter Parker AND Miles Morales as they work to save New York. Spider Man 2 was nominated for Game of the Year but fell short from winning any awards.

3 - Metroid Prime Remastered

Release Date: 2/8/2023
Number of Owners: 110
Average User Rating: 91%
2023 Completions: 15

Well at least it isn't technically a sequel...right? The remastered version of Metroid Prime makes it's way to #3 this year. If you haven't played Metroid Prime, do it! It's a great game that stands up to the test of time. While this is the only game on the list not awarded anything through the Game Awards due to remasters not being eligible, Nintendo Power did give the original game 5 out of 5 stars back in 2002. Hmmmm Nintendo giving a Nintendo game perfect score....seems fishy.

2 - Super Mario Bros. Wonder

Release Date: 10/20/2023
Number of Owners: 87
Average User Rating: 86%
2023 Completions: 16

I believe this is the 15th traditional side scrolling Super Mario Bros. game and it made it to the runner up spot this year. This is likely the first Super Mario Bros. game that was made while the developers were high on something illegal as they made it.... Whatever they did, it was a success as it made it to our number 2 spot and also won Best Family Game at this year's Game Awards. Hurry up and get this game if you're a Mario lover like me.

1 - The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom

Release Date: 5/12/2023
Number of Owners: 194
Average User Rating: 92%
2023 Completions: 19

This year's Completionator Top 10 Game of the Year is The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom! And shocker...it's another sequel! It's predecessor, Breath of the Wild, won the very first Completionator Game of the Year back in 2017. Tears of the Kingdom was one of the most talked about games of the year. After it's release so many were using the building aspects of the game in some funny ways....and some immoral ways as well. I'll never get the image of a crucified Korok out of my mind... Tears of the Kingdom was nominated for Game of the Year at the Game Awards and won Best Action/Adventure Game. As usual Completionator members continually know what's hot in the game industry with every game on this list being at least nominated for a best something of the year. This game showed up on 12 people's Top 10 lists and came close to being overtaken by Mario. If you are looking for a great game to play, be sure and pick this one up. At triple the size of BOTW you'll be busy for a long time with this one!
