Well, we're getting close to updates getting published to the website. Since the last blog, I've made some creative decisions...
First - the list. I am putting the updated list on hold. The list, as it currently stands, will remain until I replace it. Eventually, though, as I mentioned in the last blog, I plan to re-do the order using the "average score" that I use on the site...buuuut, I'm going to take it further and also re-do the average scores. Back when I first started bulding the list, I was using gamerankings.com as one of the sites to nab a score from...until metacritic gobbled it up. Games that I added before that site was closed still have that score in their average score. Likewise, depending on what platform a game is on, and how recently it was released, I may have greater or fewer sources to create an average score from. Sooo, I've been putting together a list of sites that I want to pull scores from - I'm primarily interested in user scores more than critic scores...but, I suppose I can get the critics in there, too. I'm open to any suggestions if anyone wants me to use a site to include in the average. And yes, I do plan to include Completionator among them.
Soooo, by re-doing the average scores, that means that I'll also have to go back through and re-insert the average scores on every review...which'll be a bit of a tedius process, but it's something I can worry about later. So, even when I'm "done," it'll still be a work in progress. Eh, it'll give me something to do.
Speaking of giving me something to do, I've also temporarily stopped converting reviews over. Since I plan to relaunch the site on 10/10/2025, I realized that I need to get a home page created. So, I went back to creating that for the time being...and I'm happy with the result. The inspiration of the design has been old magazines that I grew up with...and I feel like the home page has a loose look and feel of that. I've included a screenshot below...I just used a random game (Bonk 3) to get a feel for what everything might look like.
I also re-designed the main site logo. I had made a more simple design back in April...but I wanted something a little more cartoony and unique. So, I kept it simple, but gave it a little more character. It's essentially an "NES" font, but with each letter modified in Photoshop and with the spacing reduced. I also put the letters in a slight angle instead of being in a straight line. I figured that I'm a "little off," so the logo should be too.
I also created "awards" to give out to the games. Originally, on my old, old site, I had the goomba awards. A gold goomba, silver goomba, and bronze goomba for the top games. I also had a brown blooper award for the worst games. Since I don't feel like Nintendo complaining that a non-profit site is using variations of their characters, I've changed them. Now, it'll be gold, silver, and bronze medals, with an orangutan's head in the center, for the best games. Replacing the brown blooper award is the Teary Toilet Paper award, for games so bad that they can bring a tear to a roll of toilet paper's eye. I've also included the "Ape Award" in the form of a bowling trophy. My choice for that is the Ape Award is essentially a participation award - if I really like a game, but can't justify giving it a good enough of a score to receive one of the medals, I'll give it the bowling trophy - which is the kind of participation trophy I got as a child. Examples of the awards are below...
From there I started designing the main pages of the areas of the site...and removed one of them. Originally, Three Piece Moot was named because I wanted the site to be three sections based on my three main interests - video games, pro wrestling history, and comedy. The comedy section, for now at least, is being removed. Side story time. Way back when MySpace was popular, I had a blog on there that was averaging 10,000 views a week. I would write in it daily and I always got very good feedback for the comedy I put in. Esentially, I wrote the blog in character, basically channeling the people around me that never thought that they were wrong and would go so far as to make things up if it meant that they had to otherwise admit that they didn't know something or that they were incorrect. Over the years, however, at least in this country, more and more people are becoming that character....and more and more people are believing the made-up stuff that those characters come up with to stroke their egos. As much as I love writing as that character....it's hard to motivate myself to do so when it seems like much of the world around me is already doing it....except their version isn't a parody like mine. So, for now anyway, the return of my blog is put on hold. I may return to it down the road...but there's no reason to have a "under construction" page for it until I decide to come out of comedy blogging retirement.
The wrestling section will have a similar overhaul...the areas that I never started on the old site won't show up until I'm good and ready to add them. The "results" section, is also going to go away, as much as I enjoyed making it. The reason is that you can find results anywhere. Yes, my results were more detailed (and included the unadvertised easter egg of a .gif of the finish of each match in the result, if you hovered your mouse over the finish description) but they were also VERY time consuming to complete...and I just don't have that time at the moment - I'd rather get other stuff done. The only thing that will be part of that section at launch is some minor research that I've been doing on a wrestler from the 1880s, Evan "Strangler" Lewis. I like to sift through old newspapers and such, so I've been working on an interactive scrapbook in my spare time. It's in Word right now, but I'm slowly converting what I have so far over to a webpage. It'll likely be the only thing in that section at launch, and it'll be a constant work-in-progress as I continue my research, but at least it'll be something. If anyone plans to check out the site at launch, and thinks it'll be interesting to see what professional wrestling was like in 1885, then that'll be a nice page to visit.
I've also created a logo for the wrestling section of the site...an orangutan again, this time wearing a mask, doing a 'rasslin' pose. While not exact in appearance, the mask color scheme and design is based off of one of my favorite wrestlers from the 1950's/60's/70's, The Destroyer. Like the video game section logo, it's designed where the orangutan's fur changes color depending on the page that the logo appears on.
I also plan to finally have a "Links" page up. That page will have links to various sources that I collect info and data from, so I can give them proper credit, as well as links to websites from friends. I plan to eventually make a logo for that area, too...I'm thinking a grumpy orangutan dressed up like Link (because it's the "links" page) from the Legend of Zelda...but we'll see if I'm that ambitious. :)
Last, after a lot of thought, I've added a "Buy me a coffee" link. I do not plan to have ads, nor do I wish to have anyone subscribe to the website - I want it to be free for all. But, having a website costs money. You have to pay for hosting, domain names, etc. I feel like Buy me a coffee is a nice alternative for me to maybe get a little help once and a while without getting constant income to make me feel like this is a job instead of a hobby. If anyone likes what I do, they can do a single, one-off donation. I don't expect or plan to get many donations at all, but I figured I should put something there just in case anyone wanted to help out a little with the costs. Who knows? Maybe a millionaire will find the site and give me enough to retire......what? I can dream.
Anyway, with all of that mentioned, I am also going through and re-doing most pages to use some tricks I've learned while messing around with the coding for the website, so we'll see how much I actually have done by the time the new site launches. Either way, I'm pretty happy where everything is at the moment...and I'll be even happier when everything is converted and I just have to add stuff here and there instead of spending hours doing this on most days. I also expect to make more tweaks over time...my mobile test was shrinking a browser window...I'm sure I'll come across unexpected surprises in actual mobile views once the site goes live.
That's all I've got for now...As usual, if you're reading through these little blogs, I appreciate your support. I do the website for my own enjoyment and entertainment, but I genuinely hope that at least a few folks stumble across it and find some sort of enjoyment in it. Maybe this site will worm its way into your heart...and speaking of worms, please remember that all worms are gummy, you just need to add sugar. Adios.
