To go along with the Autumn Steam Sale, we're giving away some Steam games! Each giveaway has its own thread with a simple question / challenge for you to complete. Really all you need to do is post in the thread and then I'll randomly select someone. In order to participate, you need to post by 11:59PM EST on 11/30/15. That gives you one more sale day, just in case you want to buy the game if you don't win it ;) I'll post in the thread once a winner has been randomly chosen and the gifts will be sent directly through Steam (unless you prefer email).

I was a big fan of the old school survival horror games like the first few Resident Evil games and The Evil Within was directed by Shinji Mikami, who created them. I haven't played the game yet, but I think this will be the sale that I finally cave in. I enjoy horror beyond games though and can always be down for a good horror film. What are some of your favorite horror films? Do you have any low budget / lesser known favorites that horror fans should be aware of?

I'm actually not much of a horror movie fan at all. That said, this is what made it very surprising that I loved Season 1 of the Telltale The Walking Dead game. It just had an atmosphere that sat on your head and urged you on. I have Season 2 from a recent sale on Humble Bundle Store, but haven't gotten into it much yet.

Horror, my favourite genre in just about every format! :D

First up, the "lesser knowns," or at least they were when I watched them... :P

  • The Midnight Meat Train (Rocket Raccoon and Vinnie Jones!)
  • Sweatshop (Terrible TERRIBLE acting done by what looks like a bunch of Suicide Girls... hateable characters all around, but the big bad is effective and menacing and the kill scenes are gory as heck for the shoestring budget)
  • End of the Line (Trapped in a subway tunnel with crazy murderous religious nutters. Always a good combo)
  • Deadgirl (Not for "horror lite" watchers. There are concepts in this movie that will make you a very unhappy camper if you're not comfortable with some very warped behaviours)
  • Bug (Literally watching people's descent into madness, very different)
  • The Taking of Deborah Logan (Docuhorror movie about a woman with alzheimer's and things just get weird)

Also, not exactly unknown, but maybe old enough to be for many? The freakin' BLOB man. 1988 one That movie gave me nightmares as a kid.

To wrap up, my absolute favourite horror movies of all time though, just because we're on the subject and I feel like gushing. It's a tie between:

  • John Carpenter's The Thing (It has Wilford 'Diabeetus' Brimley of all people!)
  • Event Horizon (Dr. Alan Grant, Morpheus, Batman's butler, and some other people in spaaaaaaace)

If you enjoy horror and you haven't seen either of these. DO IT NOW

Very nice list, @dhobo! I haven't heard of any of the "lesser known" movies, but they will immediately go on my list to seek out. I actually haven't seen The Blob either, but I've nearly purchased it a number of times. I'll have to check Netflix and maybe I can stream it, otherwise, Amazon has me covered for a cool $5.50! Wasn't Rob Zombie going to film a remake of that (remake) sometime? Not sure what happened with that...

The Thing is definitely among my favorites as well. Much like The Bob did for you, that one gave me nightmares as a kid. The scene with the dogs is what really did it to me. Event Horizon is pretty good as well, but man, it gets WEIRD haha!

Here are some of my lesser known favorites:

  • Cube - This is probably my favorite among these. It has a great premise and does an amazing job with its low budget. There are some sequels / prequels, but I haven't seen any of them (they're supposedly not as good).
  • Phantasm - Ah, the Phantasm series! I have fond memories of watching these four movies with friends in my youth. I watch them every few years it seems like and the first one never gets old. The sequels are still great, but they tend to go in a different direction than the first one.
  • Cemetery Man - Before Rupert Everett was starring with Julia Roberts and voicing Prince Charming in Shrek, he was killing zombies in Cemetery Man! This is a deceptively cerebral zombie movie that's way underrated.
  • Dead and Buried - I finally saw this one a couple of years ago and it was worth the wait. It's a low budget 80s horror movie, but it has held up nicely.
  • Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer - Okay, so this isn't exactly a horror movie, but it's still frightening. If you like gritty movies and haven't seen this one, you need to.
  • Session 9 - This one is more of a thriller, I suppose, but it's a solid flick.
  • Duel - Before Jaws, there was DUEL!! Not exactly a horror movie, but it's an interesting movie that never seems to pop up when discussing Steven Spielberg films.
  • Ravenous - I remember renting this movie along with The Matrix back in high school and I loved it. I had no idea what it was, I just had an extra $2.99 burning a hole in my wallet and the cover looked horror-ish.
  • Return of the Living Dead - This movie is a blast to watch. They don't even really try to be scary, it's all about dark humor. And they blow up a not particularly large city that I happen to live in, ha!

Oh I can't believe I forgot to mention Ravenous or Cube! They're on my top 5 list :) I've watched the entire series of Cube movies, but the first is by and far the greatest of the bunch. The rest (Cube 2: Hypercube, and Cube Zero) are cool if you're into the backstory, but otherwise pretty crap. Apparently there's talks of a remake of the original Cube... I don't know what to think of that. Ravenous has a the best soundtrack, it's so... weirdly fitting.

Apparently Event Horizon had a TON of stuff cut from the movie because the content was "too gruesome/extreme" to tone it down for release. I would love to see that uncut version they originally planned, haha.

Thanks moho_00! I tracked down Session 9 the other day and watched it. Had such a hard time not thinking of CSI: Miami the whole time, lol
