To go along with the Autumn Steam Sale, we're giving away some Steam games! Each giveaway has its own thread with a simple question / challenge for you to complete. Really all you need to do is post in the thread and then I'll randomly select someone. In order to participate, you need to post by 11:59PM EST on 11/30/15. That gives you one more sale day, just in case you want to buy the game if you don't win it ;) I'll post in the thread once a winner has been randomly chosen and the gifts will be sent directly through Steam (unless you prefer email).

I was a big fan of JRPGs in the '90s, from the NES onward. I cut my RPG teeth on the first Dragon Warrior game and would grind over and over in that game. These days, JRPGs play a lot different from their ancestors, for better or worse. I've been playing this Grandia II re-release for the past week and I've been enjoying it immensely. It's reminded me how great a game it is and how much I used to enjoy this genre (and wish I had time to play all of the ones I missed!) If you enjoyed them before, do you still enjoy JRPGs? If you've never been a fan, what games did you try?

I haven't had as much time to play them recently, but I absolutely enjoyed Persona 4 Golden.

And Final Fantasy Tactics is still one of my all time favorites. Final Fantasy VII and X are up there too.

JRPGs were amazing, pretty much the very core of my gaming life spanning from late NES to PS2. I find myself not as into them as I used to be, but that's mostly because towards the end of the golden era of console JRPGs I was discovering that I really really liked a whole slew of other genres, so my time simply became divided amongst everything out there.

As it is now, I'm on the tail end of a Final Fantasy main series playthrough, wrapping up FFXIII-2. Got my platinum trophy on ps3, but there's still some DLC and collectible stuff to do before I retire it. I have a pile of more "modern" (Late ps2 and beyond) JRPGs I bought out of reflex and just haven't sunk much or any time into yet.

As for not final fantasy/dragon warrior favorites?

  • Xenogears
  • Parasite Eve
  • Star Ocean (the not crap ones)
  • Secret of Mana (kind of cheating as this is loosely related to final fantasy as it is the sequel to final fantasy adventure!)

My first experience into the JRPG realm was FF3 on SNES (FF6 in Japan that eventually made it's way to the PS1 but I digress). I remember playing that game initially and thinking "What in the hell is this garbage?". However, since I spent my hard earned 20 bucks to get it from the local rental place, I was determined to get through it.

After giving it some serious attention and realizing what I had, I quickly realized it was pure gold and pretty sure I played through it several times (back when I had all the time in the world, of course).

With that being said, I don't play them as MUCH as I used to just to the massive amount of time they typically require. I still do enjoy them though...Just wish they'd release some JRPGs that were not 100+ hours to complete.

@jwcooley - Winner! The good news is, this one isn't 100+ hours long (more like 30). The bad news is, there are a lot of games mentioned in this thread that I need to complete...
