I'm thinking we'll have a theme that we've never used before in March. Some possible ideas I've been kicking around are:

  • Vehicular combat - This was my original thought, and was in fact the inspiration for my thread on how I'm bad at these games. It was almost like a challenge for me to actually try some of these games. This would be a fairly loose theme though, so even battle racing kinda games like Mario Kart and Carmageddon could sneak in. It wouldn't necessarily just be Twisted Metal and its clones.
  • Strategy games - This is another sort of selfish theme since I love strategy games
  • Short-ish RPGs - RPGs are among some of the longest games out there, but there are also some shorter ones that might work as a monthly theme. I'm thinking we'd stick to games that are are in the under 15 (maybe 20) hour range.
  • moho_00's favorites - This is another selfish theme and I don't have a better name for it, but my birthday is in March and since we already have a yearly bounty for The Guardian Legend, I thought about expanding it to include some of my other favorites that don't have a lot of completions around here. I also thought it could be a precursor to maybe having someone else get to select their favorites for a theme sometime in the future (maybe the winner of a forum contest or something?)
  • Handheld exclusives - This one is pretty self-explanatory, but basically anything that was only available on systems like Game Boy, Game Gear, DS, PSP, etc. We'd probably limit the "exclusivity" to physical releases, so games that were on like Virtual Console and stuff could still count.
  • Anthromorphic games - This one would be for games that either starred or mostly contained anthromorphic characters, so Earthworm Jim and the like.
  • Dinosaur / Kaiju games - Okay, so I'm sort of saving this for when the new Jurassic Park movie comes out, but figured I'd include it too.

I say for March go with moho's favorites!

I do like the short RPGs one too but I almost would want that to be a 2 month thing so I could have time to do more than one...or two, haha.

I think a moho_00's favourites bounty list could be fun too. Not that I've had time for much gaming, let alone bounties, lately. Hopefully others will enjoy experiencing your tastes in games!

I'm sure you guys have seen, but I went with my favorites for this month It's funny, I didn't intentionally come up with a list where the most recent game was from like 2001 (unless you count the digital re-release of Jet Set Radio, which we do have separate from its original Dreamcast release). My process for selecting the games was really quite simple. I went to my collection and looked at the games I had rated the highest and came up with a list of 50 or so. I then whittled it down after reflecting on my experiences with them, while also somewhat taking into consideration how many people own them and which ones had fewer completions.

With that being said, now I'm going to try and talk everyone into playing some games (I contemplated creating a stack for this, but eh, this will work.)

  • The Guardian Legend - What else can I say about this game, it's one of the most underrated games of all time and will forever remain one of my favorite games. If you play one game on this list, this should be it.
  • Mega Man 5 - This was the only Mega Man game I had as a kid and it remains my favorite for that very reason. If you like the Mega Man games and you haven't played this one, it's worth giving it a go. If you don't like them, this one won't change your mind.
  • Pikmin - Who would've thought this concept would ever work? An RTS with only a handful of "units" (to use standard RTS nomenclature) to utilize, all of which are tiny plant-like creatures. You command your army to defeat enemies and recover parts to your ship so you can return home. If you've never played Pikmin before, now is your chance! The first game is actually pretty short and can be knocked out in a day.
  • Giants: Citizen Kabuto - This is another criminally underrated game that just oozes with style and interesting gameplay. You control three very unique species in a wacky alien world while experiencing a genuinely funny and enjoyable story that never takes itself too seriously.
  • Resident Evil 2 - This still stands as my favorite Resident Evil game and while you'll need to be okay with tank controls, it offers some awesome gameplay if you're into this style.
  • Dragon Warrior - Okay, so this one is a tough sell if you're not a fan of the series or if you didn't play it back in the day. It has some very dated mechanics and too often turns into a grindfest. But if you're like me and you get all nostalgic when a slime draws near, then this will be a fun trip down memory lane.
  • Sonic the Hedgehog 2 - This was a pack-in game with my Genesis when I bought it back in the '90s and it was the only game I had on the system for months. I used to beat it before school pretty regularly, so I might have to give this one a go and see if I still have that muscle memory!
  • Thief Gold - I've actually been wanting to replay this game for a long time now, so I might have to jump on this one. I've beaten the original Thief multiple times and it's one of my favorites. I've never played through all of the Gold levels though. This release seamlessly integrates the new levels into one cohesive story.
  • Super Mario Bros. - There's not much I can say here, everyone should know about this one. I haven't beaten this one in probably 25 years. Maybe it's time for a return.
  • Goldeneye 007 - Without a doubt, this is my favorite console exclusive FPS. Yes, a lot of that is because of nostalgia, but the single player campaign is still pretty darn good. The only complaint I have is the one I had in the '90s and it's that the framerate can struggle at times. But if you've never played this one, it's time to pay tribute to the granddaddy of console FPS games.
  • ChuChu Rocket! - Do you like puzzles? Do you like wacky? If so, then you should be playing this.
  • Gex - This game is totally '90s and that's okay! I wish Gex would make a glorious return, but sadly, that's very unlikely at this point. The first game is completely different than the two sequels that would follow, but it's still a pretty neat game. It's a 2D sidescroller with some interesting ideas and a whole lot of '90s attitude. This one is available on GOG too, so it's easily attainable. I might even have an extra GOG key if anyone is interested...
  • StarTropics - I only played through this game once as a kid, but I remember having a blast. I might dig this one out too, but I have a feeling the difficulty will do me in now haha!
  • Jet Set Radio - This is the first game I can recall that featured cel-shading and it was pretty nifty back then. Although it might look like a sporty rollerblading kinda game, this is actually more of an action game with some sports and racing mechanics. It's not a very long game, still quite unique, and readily available on Steam. So what are you waiting for!?
  • Duke Nukem 3D - I didn't have a PC until 1998, so I missed the King make his 3D debut. I ended up getting the PS1 port, which wasn't nearly as good as the PC version I had played at a friend's house, but it was sufficient! This game screams '90s even more than Gex, but that's okay. This is a must play for shooter fans.
  • Nightmare Creatures - This one just barely made the cut. I loooved this game back in the day, it's non-stop action in a dark / horror-inspired environment and loaded with blood and gore. I was like 16 at the time it came out, so it was a no-brainer! Having played it for funsies a couple of years ago, it wasn't really the great game I remember it being, but I still have lots of great memories of playing it. And it's a pretty tough game too, so don't expect a mindless action game here or you'll be seeing the Game Over screen a whole lot.
  • Zombies Ate My Neighbors - This game has the odd distinction of being the only game on the list that I haven't actually finished (unless you count the extra levels in Thief Gold). I had this on Genesis and despite playing the heck out of it, I could never actually beat it due to its difficulty. It gets crazy hard, at least for me! I might give this one a whirl, but I'm gonna warn you...I'm probably going to cheat
  • Carmageddon 2: Carpocalypse Now - This is probably my favorite Carmageddon game. I still have my big box copy from the '90s sitting on my shelf! This game took the original Carmageddon formula, tightened it up a bit, and threw it into a fully 3D engine. Oh yeah, it's good. And it's dirt cheap on GOG and Steam, so you should go buy it. And play it. And run over all of the things ever.
  • Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles IV: Turtles in Time - I didn't have a SNES until the end of high school, but this was one of the first games I sought out. You probably already know it's a classic Konami beat 'em up. So spare 30-40 minutes of your time this month and kick some shell!
  • Snatcher - Sadly, I don't expect anyone to even consider playing this one, but I had to include it. This game is just a superb classic. I drooled over this game in the '90s, but I didn't have a Sega CD at the time. I finally picked one up a number of years ago and this was one of the first games I picked up. It has held up very well and offers some great animation, music, and story. It's mostly an interactive story, so there's minimal traditional gameplay (i.e. shooting), but don't let that stop you. If you can find it and can shell out the cash, this is a terrific trophy for your collection and a game well worth playing through.

What do you guys think about April? I haven't really thought about any new themes, so I'll probably go for one of the ones in post #151. The Rampage movie comes out in April, so dinosaur / kaiju might work. I've also been (re-)addicted to Kohan, so strategy games sound pretty good too. I'm open to new ideas as well
