Hard not to accept this one. It's such a short but fun rpg :D

Indeed! It's been a long time since I've played this one, but I'm looking forward to it.

How short do you think it is? This one is getting my interest.

It's been a while, but I think it's probably 10-15 hours. Depends on how much you want to grind hehe

Yeah, even with grinding to max level or whatever, it might add about 3-5 hours. It's a fairly compact RPG.

I started my journey today and played for about 1.5 hours. I made it to level 7 and finally have a Copper Sword and Chain Mail! I think I'm ready to travel to Kol and see if I remember where the hidden flute is :P I'll probably get destroyed by some skeletons along the way (I seem to recall them being nearby).

I remember this game being a grindfest and the encounter rate was through the roof, but....man, I forgot it was THIS bad! It's still great, nostalgic fun, but I could see this one being tough for new players haha.

20 minutes in (I swear it took me 5 minutes just to settle on a name) and I'm a hulkingly powerful level 3. The early game grind is probably the worst part of this game, haha. It feels so slow.

Haha yeah, I totally agree, the early game grind is rough. If I didn't have huge nostalgic ties to the game, I probably wouldn't make it through. I played a little bit last night, but I'm still level 7. I went to the cave below the western bridge (from the starting castle) and held my own....until the skeletons and poltergeists started ripping me to shreds. I didn't die, but I had to burn all of my MP and use my only herb before crawling back to town. I need to remember where to buy the broad sword, seems like that's my next weapon? It's definitely not in Kol. I also didn't remember where the flute is. I need to find the person that tells you where it is hehe.

I've realized two more things while playing this game:

  • The game is pretty much open world, just like the Fallout and Elder Scrolls. And similar to those games, if you wander in areas you're not ready for, you're gonna get destroyed. But aside from the rainbow bridge you have to build to get to the last dungeon, you can go anywhere you want.
  • I reaaaaaaally miss the Explorer's Handbook and other junk that came with the game. I have a boxed copy, but no instructions / paperwork :P Having that info was extremely handy and I'm pretty sure it had maps to everything.

haha yeah, classic rpg design. No indications of "don't go here" apart from getting completely murdered by the sudden change in enemy rosters. Granted, lazy enemy mapping also means you can take advantage of it in some spots to grind out on higher level enemies when you shouldn't even be able to encounter them yet.

Well, I don't think I'll be getting this one done in time for the bounty, unfortunately. My free time hasn't really been used too effectively of late for various reasons, so this never got accomplished. Also why I haven't really jumped on any of the other bounties yet. Hopefully this all changes soon.

I'm kind of surprised that these games haven't come back out in some collection for a newer system by now given that they re-release everything these days.

I have a copy of DW1 and DW2 but have never played them.
