I'm excited for this one. I've played this one a few times as a kid and I don't believe that I beat this one. Great game! |

I was inspired by the SNES discussion in another thread :) This would be a a huuuuge game for me to get off my backlog! And there might be more SNES lovin' on the way hehe. |

I started playing this game today and although I've only played about an hour so far...it's REALLY good! I can't believe it's taken me this long to play this game. The only Metroid games I've actually finished are Metroid II: Return of Samus and Metroid Prime. It will feel good to get this one under my belt. Aside from the superb gameplay, I feel the soundtrack is worth mentioning. I wish I would've played this when it first came out since I'm sure it was even more powerful then, but I just love the atmospheric it has. This seems like such a mature game in tone, especially compared to other big SNES games like Super Mario World, Donkey Kong Country, etc. |

I'm about 3 hours in and am still really enjoying it. I have defeated one boss and am going through collecting all the items i missed in the areas I have access to. I like how you have to revisit old areas as you collect more items. However, I do forget where I'm supposed to revisit sometimes. I remember renting this from the video store when I was a kid a few times and had a blast with it. I think I'm further than I've ever been on this game, which wasn't all that far apparently. Unlike you, I haven't beat a single Metroid game yet. In addition to this game, I've played Metroid, Metroid Prime and Metroid Other M. I reached the final boss on Metroid Prime but never beat it. I gave up and haven't gone back. It was just assigned as a Mission the other day so I'll start back from the beginning soon and try again. |

I finally finished Super Metroid last night. I thought it was a fantastic game, though I felt lost most of the time haha. I used a guide to get some of the items, especially towards the end. My main complaint is the map left a lot to be desired. But I think it's more that I've been spoiled by modern gaming than it is the map itself. So I can't really fault the game for that. I would've liked this game a lot more if I had played it in the 90s, but I still really enjoyed it. I gave it a 9/10, though to be honest, I'd probably give it more like a 7 or 8, but I gave it an extra 1-2 points to adjust for the times. The game is superb quality, but I don't think it's aged as well as say Castlevania: Symphony of the Night. |

It's pretty amazing to consider how spoiled gamers are today vs the stuff we'd put up with in the past. Having seen such a wide variety of games which have incrementally improved in various ways every year, it can be pretty jarring to go back and play the classics, especially those you haven't played in a decade or so and view with high regard due to NostalgiaVision. I'm fortunate in that while I do suffer from the initial shock of "Ugh, it was this bad? Really?" for the first few minutes, I usually quickly acclimate and enjoy myself just fine for the rest of the game. I know people who are permanently spoiled by modern conveniences and graphics, who can't bring themselves to play older games as a result, and I think that's kind of sad. |

Yeah, you're right that gamers today are spoiled (myself included)! I look back at some of the games I beat back in the 80s and 90s and think "I beat that game!?! How did I ever manage that??" A good example would be Mega Man 5. It was the only Mega Man game I had as a kid and I played it to death. I had the levels and bosses down so well I could just roll through the game. About 8-9 years ago, I loaded it up and played it after not having turned it on in 10+ years and ROLLED through it. I was amazed. It all came down to muscle memory, which was very clear to me when fighting the bosses. Somehow my brain and fingers had remembered the patterns. So either I had some residual skill there or I'm just a prodigy when it comes to Mega Man. Well, it's definitely not the latter! I started playing them with the Mega Man Legacy Collection on Steam and I'm struggling. The first one was brutal and the only way I beat it was with save states. Mega Man 2 was a little easier, but still pretty tough. I played Mega Man 3 yesterday and today and finally finished it, but man, it was soul-crushingly difficult! I mean, some of those jumps / enemy placements are just evil. Once again, save states were the only way I was able to make it. It'll be interesting to see how well I do in Mega Man 5 this time around... I think I do a pretty good job of recognizing good games / design, even if I don't have the nostalgic ties to a game. The quality of Super Metroid is off the charts and it might be the most impressive game overall I've played for the SNES, though admittedly I haven't played that many. But as I said before, modern map systems really made that one tough to play for the first time blind. I'm curious how well I would do with Metroid II since I played through that one many times and knew it pretty well. But now it's been 20+ years... I've been playing / recording videos of my Saturn games, mainly the ones I've never actually played and it's pretty clear when a game is actually bad. I mean, you could tell a game was bad even when it was first released. A good example is that old Iron Man and X-O Manowar in Heavy Metal game. It had a couple of neat ideas, but it's utterly unplayable these days and I can't imagine it was much better in the mid-90s.

I'm sad to say but I failed this bounty. I put over 6 hours into it but didn't get all the way through it. I plan on finishing it over the next few days though. I beat 3 bosses and am trying to figure my way though Maridia now. I unfortunatly had to look at a walkthrough to help me understand where to go next in Maridia (i like to try and get through games unassisted, but sometimes you just gotta) It's been a fun game so far. The problem I have been having is getting lost easily. You have to remember where to go back to when you get a new item so you can get to areas that are unaccessable without those items. |
