It's entirely possible that I'm just blind, but in case I'm not, it would be great if we could have the ability to pick the currency in which we log the game's value. Considering the exchange rates and the like fluctuate a fair bit, it skews the value of the collection heavily.

Are you referring to the amount you paid or the estimated value? In either case, they're both presented (and assumed to be) in US dollars. I hadn't considered other currencies before, but I could see that being useful. I could certainly add an option that would change the presentation into a user's preferred currency for the amount paid value.

The estimated values come from VGPC and they (mostly) only support NTSC-U releases, so unfortunately, it's a feature that will mostly only work for USA residents :( I could do a conversion into another currency, but that would require hitting an API on a fairly regular basis to ensure some level of accuracy. I'm not sure if there are free APIs out there for this as I've never had to do it before. I'll have to do some research.

Mostly meant the amount paid, for accuracy's sake. :) With a single value, like the estimated one, it's plenty quick to just Google the current exchange rates. Doing so for multiple titles separately is a lot more tedious, though.

If I may also add a request for other more unorthodox currency options...

Gift/Trade
Free To Play/Monthly Subscription
Free Demo
Open/Closed Beta
Backup/Burned Copy

For titles in My Collection that match this criteria I write $0.00 or leave it null, but is there a possibility this could happen? I was gifted Arma III by my older brother, so technically I spent $0.00 on it, but I just feel like it's not represented properly as I could have alternatively bought it myself for the base price. Does this request make sense to you?

As far as MMO-type or (basically) endless replayable games that require additional investment I would suggest a separate category since the amount you invested in the game increases over time.

The rest on the list are to suggest different ways to represent categories of "free" or $0.00.

Just a few thoughts I've come across during my logging and gaming sessions!

The amount paid field is really more for your initial cost, so keeping track of the cumulative cost of games that require a subscription would be a totally different animal. However, I think you're touching on something that I've had on my list for a while to implement, which is an option to enter where you bought a game. Initially, I figured this would be a dropdown with options like "Amazon", "GameStop", "Best Buy", etc. The more I thought about it, the more I realized that I could probably never come up with a complete list of options, especially as more and more digital storefronts (specifically for Steam keys) keep popping up. So I think it'd be a textbox with some autocomplete based on your other entries (exactly how tags work).

I think that would cover the majority of things since I'd say most items in one's collection would be self-purchased. But for the games that were acquired free (again, Steam is a very prevalent example), games that you traded for, etc, you wouldn't really have a "purchase location". So perhaps another dropdown to indicate how you acquired it, with the default being "Purchased" or something.

As for the options you've listed, here's how I think they could fit into all of this:

  • Gift/Trade - Perfect fit, but probably separate them out.
  • Free To Play/Monthly Subscription - I think Free to Play makes sense since you wouldn't purchase it, but subscription-based games tend to require an initial purchase, so I'm not sure.
  • Free Demo - This could be an option since there's nothing stopping users from logging demos they "own" in their collection, but probably not a prevalent option.
  • Open/Closed Beta - I'd liken this one to the demo option, so if that one makes the cut, I could see this one being there as well. Or perhaps merging them into one option like "Demo / Beta"
  • Backup/Burned Copy - This is a tough one because it can potentially tie into emulation / bootlegging. If we could come up with a generic term to capture all of those types of things, that would be good :) My default suggestion would be "Other", which is probably something that would be needed anyways to catch any other random ways a game could be required (now or in the future).

Allowing users to write in their own game purchase source tags or whatever would work great. Regardless of whether it was a demo, a beta, f2p, pirated (boo!), etc... it's up to the user to get as specific or generic as they want. I'm all for this idea!

Being able to track digital storefronts with this would be a nice extra as well with the custom tag format. Be interesting to break down my collection based on where I bought most of my digital titles from!

@moho_00 - That all sounds pretty well put together there. The only thing worth mentioning is that suggesting a category for "Backups" is not for bootlegging terms but rather an actual second copy made legitimately from your own purchased original. I tend to make backups to play in order to preserve my precious discs. I do appreciate your thoughts on the matter.

@dhobo - Storefronts was something I was just thinking of too, but I didn't really know how to pitch it in after all of that. Time and place of my purchase has a lot of relevance to me at least. I like to go thrifting at different locations to see what I can find so it would be nice to log where I found the best stuff.

As far emulation goes, I have multiple playthroughs on my PC emulators as well as the native consoles for games purchased legitimately, so that's really why i suggested the idea in the first place. I guess it's not really necessary other than an "Other" option as you mentioned, but it would be neat to be able to have a few extra options for that kinda of thing.

Along with today's new release, there are two new fields: Acquisition Type and Acquisition Source. They've also been added as filters on the Collection Search page. Let me know what you guys think.

So this is a totally rare use case but uh.... can you add an acquisition type for "review copy"? For years I have wanted to know how many games in my collection are from devs/publishers for review versus what I actually bought myself. I don't consider it a gift because, well, it's not really.

On the other hand, very few people would ever use this option. I just don't want to mark them as "other" given the talk here that "other" means something else to folks (including myself). Other than that, I think this is a good implementation :D.

( thanks for the great search function for forums I don't have to start a new thread ;-) )

As somebody 'stole' this thread with a totally different request and his(her) request is fulfilled I like to go back to the original question:
Please support other currency's, especially for amount paid you can enter :-) tnx

Well, it took me long enough, but I am pleased to announce that I have FINALLY added a "Preferred Currency" option on the Account Settings page. This will simply toggle the icon that you see when entering or viewing the Amount Paid field. As I stated before, it does not impact the Estimated Value whatsoever and that will continue to be displayed in US Dollars.

It's not live yet, but will be going out sometime this weekend. I hope it will prove to be useful for you guys!
