There a re tons of rumors out as to what this thing is going to be (or not be) and features that is will have. I am just curious what everyone's thoughts are. Are you interested in it ? What do direction do you think Nintendo will take this in ? What features would YOU like to see ? |

The statements coming out state it's going to be very casual-centric, which doesn't interest me much, sadly. Never did get a Wii, though I did get a WiiU later on, so I have a feeling I'll do the same with NX, just wait until the next backward compatible console (or whatever it is) comes out. |

Is the Wii U completely backwards compatible with Wii games? (sorry, off topic..) |

I never knew that. It might be time to trade the Wii in and upgrade. :P |

Cooley, I actually purchased a Wii U on Ebay for about $160 a few weeks back. If you are patient you can find good deals on people that purchased them for a single game and then never played them again. Wii games will play on Wii U , but Gamecube games will not. I have only played a couple of games on it and I am enjoying them. My favorite feature thus far is that fact that I can play a game on the gamepad only if some else wants to watch tv. The Game Pad is a great concept. Too bad it didn't really take off. I believe this was largely a marketing issue. |

Marketing absolutely. My brother's family has a Wii that they used a fair bit and they had no idea what a WiiU was two-three years after it launched until I got one for myself and they came to visit. Granted, all kids these days play are terrible mobile games, so it probably doesn't matter much :P |

You are right about the mobile games. I am a little afraid that Nintendo is sitting in a board room right now looking at charts and graphs on the usage and level of participation in Pokemon GO and seeing their future in Mobile and not platform. I have to admit though, I have though for a while now that with their experience in interesting user interfaces Nintnedo could be a player in the mobile phone market if they wanted to be, but that space is probably getting harder to compete in. |

I bought the Wii U on day 1 and have no regrets. I've enjoyed it immensely and look forward to the NX. |

I have had the following at some point through my life time, the NES, SNES, N64, Gamecube, Wii and Wii U. I have enjoyed all of them and I can assure you that I will have the NX when it comes out. |

I don't particularly like Nintendo as a company, but I adore a vast majority of their iconic titles. If they weren't so cursed with milking franchises I probably would have grown up to be a bigger fan. At this point in my life, however, I find it extremely tough for me to be drawn anything next-gen Nintendo at all. Seeing how much they got back from Pokemon Go, it wouldn't surprise me to see almost nothing but mobile focuses and franchises spilling out of them in the next few months/years. Apparently the app is already getting revamps and updates to incorporate more battle-oriented functions. I feel like this is the first of many to come, and it's something I'm not particularly sold on at this point.
What titles did you grab upon release? What would you recommend? I know the console has been out for awhile now, but I kind of missed the boat altogether. I remember hearing talks of some pretty noteworthy games to be released on WiiU, but being on the other side of the spectrum completely I tend to miss out on important dates.

These were the games I picked up at launch: If you like the New Super Mario Bros. series, you'll like this one. It's a very good platformer. This game did not review very well, but I enjoyed it quite a bit. I played through the single player mode and sure, it was incredibly repetitive, but you just roll around in a tank blowing stuff up. The multiplayer mode is a blast too, especially the 3 on 1 mode. I thought this game was pretty fun as well. I was absolutely terrible at it and therefore never finished it. I'd like to pick up the PC version at some point since I think I'll do a little better with that one. This was a pack-in game and for free, I'm not gonna complain. It's not a great single-player game, but the multiplayer modes are a lot of fun. After launch, I played a number of games that I greatly enjoyed, but I'll try to keep this list brief. I had never actually played a Dynasty Warriors game, so this was a fairly fresh experience for me. Slap the Zelda license on top of that and you have a winner to me. The reviews I read made it sound like this game was GTA for kids....and that's exactly what it was. Well, maybe not exactly, but it was pretty close to that. If you like the Lego games and would prefer more of an open world, this one is for you. I have nothing to say other than it's Mario Kart. And you drive upside down. I technically bought this one at launch...I think? I can't remember anymore, but it's a really fun digital release. It's a twin stick shooter with some ship customization and tons of aliens to blast on 3D tube-like planets. Ummmmm.....IT'S PIKMIN!!!!!! Originally slated as an exclusive (I think?), this one ended up on pretty much every platform. Nevertheless, I seem to recall some nice usage of the gamepad on it, so I'll give it a nod here. It's a fantastic game, regardless. This is one of my favorites for the system. I prefer it over New Super Mario Bros. U. If you grew up on the old NES / SNES Mario games, this is what you've been waiting for. Build all sorts of craziness and upload it for the world to try and defeat. And then you can pull down other levels and try to conquer them yourself. I haven't really started playing this game yet, but it's worth mentioning because I can actually play Twilight Princess WITHOUT MOTION CONTROLS!!

That's quite a list for a day one release! Zelda and Rayman games are the most tempting for me, especially Twilight Princes because, as stated, no motion controls will deem this one finally playable for me. It was almost reason enough to purchase a Gamecube back in the day (fortunately there were tons of reasons to get one anyway). I haven't played a new Rayman game since the party one on Wii, and I remember feeling disappointed by it at the time. Legends looks a lot better right from the get-go, so that's one I may gravitate towards. I could also never get on board with Super Mario Maker given that it's not really my cup of tea, but the whole premise behind it seems pretty amazing. I can only imagine some of the levels built by some '80s NES vets!

Oh man, if you haven't played Rayman Origins or Rayman Legends yet, I highly recommend them both! |

This is how far behind I am...the last Rayman game I completed was Rayman 2: The Great Escape! I honestly think that was back sometime before the year 2000! Needless to say I'm very behind!

http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2016-07-26-nx-is-a-portable-console-with-detachable-controllers So it's a hybrid. With a tegra processor. I guess I'll have to wait and see what it looks and performs like, but I feel like Nintendo is only competing with itself (against the 3DS) with this approach. |

Wow, that's.....interesting. I agree with you that it seems like they're competing with the 3DS, but it makes me wonder if they plan to retire the 3DS, which is now over 5 years old (let's ignore the silly "New" 3DS thing)? If they DO retire the 3DS, I'm actually more excited for the NX. Don't get me wrong, I love the 3DS, but I pretty much never play handheld games, aside from vacation. That sucks because there are lots of great games I'd like to play that are handheld-only. By merging the product lines, that means I could potentially play Harvest Moon on a friggin' TV again!! Or maybe I can finally play a real Pokemon game without relying on a tiny screen. If it's a truly separate product, then I feel they're once again creating a confusing marketing message, much like they did with the Wii U. Since their marketing message will supposedly be that you can take your games on the go, how will they truly separate it from their 3DS (or whatever true handheld they have at the time) line? I've been with the Big N for decades now and I'm still very intrigued by this hardware. Pretty much every Nintendo console (and handheld, for that matter) has had some bit of interesting / groundbreaking technology, so I can't wait to hear the full details from them directly. They will get my money, I'm sure grumble, grumble

Some of the early rumors out suggested this and it has it's advantages and disadvantages to be sure. It allows them to focus their developers down the past of one system and therefore create a lot more first party content. More content is big for Nintendo, as this has long been a problem they the have had varying degrees of success resolving depending on the console. However even so, I don't think a Nintendo console can survive on the fruits of it's own labor alone. It has to get better third party support than Wii U did. This is where the mobile platform might become a problem. If this create a woeful lack o of horsepower. Or an unreasonable amount of development to port games over too, they could be in trouble. I am a big believe that a game can have slightly less than state of the art graphics technology and still be a great game. And game companies will figure out a way to get a game to run on a reasonably up to date platform if they believe that they can make money. So Nintendo's job will be to get that install base of the ground and quickly like they did with Wii. They ways to do this are price, marketing and probably most of all, LOTS OF GREAT LAUNCH TITLES. |

I think the shoddy sales numbers of the WiiU, the differing architecture, and the lack of computing oomph behind the NX are going to keep third party developers at bay again until Nintendo shows them it'll be worthwhile/possible to develop competent ports of games. Otherwise, it'll be the first-party showcase machine yet again and become the WiiU 2.0

I agree and this almost creates a catch 22, where they need a solid install base to attract third party titles and they need third party support to drive up their install base. I think their only hope to break that cycle is for nintendo to release a major game for almost every major property before Holiday 2017. A new Zelda title a launch is smart. That will sell a couple million systems by itself, but it will take more than Link alone to drive sales to where they need them to be n the critical launch year. |
