Sega has announced that they will be releasing a large sum of their classic games all on one console to boot. The Genesis/Megadrive console was my all-time favorite hands down, with too many great games to list. I think this is an excellent step in the right direction for gaming, as the younger generations who probably missed out on a lot of these titles will be able to appreciate them in their native glory. As a collector, this kind of bundle is definitely exciting! The handheld console is something that I must have! The display resolution seems to enhance the pixels for games, so for me that's a pretty big deal.

How does everyone feel about this? With Nintendo pushing out something similar with the NES classics, it makes sense for competitors to do the same. It's a nice surprise to see this out of Sega if you ask me.

I've never bought one of these myself, but I've seen this thing a number of times in the past in Walmarts and such. They're supposed to be pretty awful.

The sound emulation in particular is really really shoddy on these chinese knockoff Sega clonesoles.

That's good info to know. Thanks for the heads up. Have you had any experience with the handheld versions? That's the main appeal here for me...

I picked up one of the Atari Flashback consoles a few months ago on clearance, but I haven't even tried it out. I also have a Neo Geo Gold X, which is sort of along these lines. I've played it briefly and thought it was pretty good. I'm okay with the emulation not being absolutely perfect because most of the games I wouldn't play otherwise.

As for these Genesis consoles, I haven't used one myself, but have definitely seen them in stores. I think these things are great for consumers that just want a bunch of games with hardware that requires very little setup / maintenance. There's no downloading software, configuring hardware, etc. Just plug it in and you can play a boatload of games. That's exactly why I bought the two I mentioned above.

This is really the main appeal here for me. I came across a couple of these in the past, but I was always on the fence about purchasing because I want some feedback beforehand. The accessibility is cool considering how hard it can be to obtain certain titles on Sega Genesis.

I cannot speak to the quality specifically, but over on AtariAge people abhor At Games (named as the manufacturer for this Sega system). Basically, it's thanks to their reaction to At Games and their products that I never bought one.

Obviously, times have changed since the first of these plug in and play consoles came out, so maybe they've gotten better at producing consoles.

I'm curious though, what exactly is the difference between the new Genesis console/handheld from their existing 80 game offerings already on the market? They do a yearly refresh similar to Flashback systems so maybe they always include some different games. That's my best guess. https://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss_1?url=search-alias%3Dvideogames&field-keywords=atgames+sega+genesis

PS: Just found out the 2015 version of the console is composite out. Not horrible if you have an older TV or converters around, but many (myself included) are now seeking out retro remake consoles that include HDMI for ease of use.

@Marcus Doesn't look like the one you posted comes with the cheap portable display screen thing mentioned in the new one being released.

I think this along with the thing that Nintendo is doing is pretty cool. I personally probably won't pick 'em up, but man, the Nintendo one does get my attention.
