I've had an idea for a while that would be centered around just collecting everyone's thoughts / history / nostalgia around particular games. I'm not sure if there's enough interest or enough meat to this idea to warrant a full-fledged feature, so I figured why not try it as forum posts to start with? I find it interesting to hear what people have to say about games, maybe they liked it, maybe they hated it, maybe they haven't played it but always wanted to, maybe they've never heard of it, etc. This is your chance to share with the world what you think! So let's start off with Anachronox! You can post whatever you want (hopefully on topic hehe), but I'll start off to give you all some examples. Have I played it? Yes I remember first reading about Anachronox in the late '90s. Times were different then, in terms of marketing, and Eidos had a unique way of promoting a slew of upcoming games together. I recall games like Anachronox, Revenant, Abomination: The Nemesis Project, Omikron: The Nomad Soul, etc appearing in the same PC Gamer ad or included in promotional material with games I purchased. I knew very little about the game at the time, but it seemed...different. After many delays, it was finally released in June 2001. I worked at Electronics Boutique at the time and I remember the day it came out because I was working at a smaller store than my usual location. I recall that particular store only received like 2 or 3 copies and I thought wow, what happened to this game!?! It still looked like fun, so I utilized my 10% employee discount and picked it up right then. I started playing the game and was immediately drawn into its wacky blend of JRPG, sci-fi, comical setting. Sure, the Quake II engine it was running on was really showing its age by then, but the game was loaded with personality and unique ideas. Alas, like many games during my college years, I eventually stopped playing. Over the next few years, I would start over and remind myself of how cool the game was. But each time, I was unable to finish it. And then, FINALLY, in the late '00s, I managed to stick with it and play it all the way through. It's a long, wild ride that leaves you wanting more (both in terms of gameplay and story) and made me wish I hadn't waited so long to see it through to the end. Although the game performed well with critics, it ultimately didn't sell enough copies to greenlight a sequel and thus the story remains unfinished. But don't let that deter you from picking it up, especially since it drops to like $2-3 on GOG and Steam all the time. |

I've not played it yet, but long intended to. I recently picked it up on Steam, so I'll jump in on the thoughts discussion once I've had the chance to at least start it :) |
