Did this ever get released on something other than NES?

Nope, it's only on NES.

This was one of my favourite NES games by far.

Sure, it was ridiculously unfair at times, but I loved it.

This is the only horror bounty that doesn't have any participants...someone must be brave enough to defeat it!

All right. Got this set up to play tonight. Dunno if I'll get through it in one shot or not, it's been a while since I last played it, haha.

Phew, I made it!!

I was a weenie and used save states a bit, but I don't mind it too much on this particular game since there's really no penalty for dying....you just respawn at the beginning. So I just saved myself a lot of time :)

Overall, I think I had a pretty good run and remembered things rather well from my playthrough 5 or so years ago. The bosses take forever to kill, but luckily I remembered most of their patterns.

Here are a few tips for anyone else that's playing (if you've played before, you probably know all this, but whatever!)

  • When you kill a boss, all of your special items / weapons will reload to their maximum values (NOTE: This does not include things like lightbulbs, money, and keys. But it does include potions / invisibility potions and missiles, and that's all you need to know.)
  • Soooo.....ABUSE THE INVISIBILITY POTIONS!! Just drink up and wail on the bosses as needed.
  • Some enemies are MUCH easier to kill with the whip, so be sure to max it out once you get it and switch as needed.
  • Enemies have a ridiculous respawn rate, which is basically as soon as their spawn location is on screen. They'll spawn even if they haven't been killed, so long as they're not in a certain....area. Or at least, I think that's how it works. In any case, try to move the screen a smidge if you run into a seemingly endless supply of enemies.
  • There are two additional health bars you can find in the game. The first one is in the first building you come across, which is also the only one without a boss in it. Just search around for a dead end and press a button or something. You'll get it.
  • The second one comes a lot later in the game and it's in a seemingly inaccessible house. If you're above the house, on the left-hand side, you can actually walk through the bushes, whereas you normally cannot. Follow this invisible path to the house and open the door.
  • You might want to look up a map for the house because if you don't know it's coming and then you backtrack, you'll sometimes get a nasty giant spider enemy. These only appear to spawn when you backtrack and I assure you, you do not want to fight one. If you do run into it, there's a hot dog stand just above the house in question, so fill up, if necessary.
  • Umm....the whip will collect items, so don't smash the attack button, lest you collect a red whip or red gun.
  • Be ready to use your nooses in the spaceship, those alien things with the rocks flying around them are just assholes.
  • Oh and I stumbled upon a weakness for the final boss that I had never encountered before. If you stand to the left of him right on the edge of the screen, the main gun can't hit you. I used invisibility potions to kill the two guns in the front, then was just trying to avoid being hit and found that sweet-spot. I stood there and blasted it with missiles and that was it.

Grats! This game is as annoying as I remember. Ahh, nostalgia...

My fingers hurt. Spamming shoot is painful. I'll try again when my hands aren't so sore. :/

I had to quit for tonight just before the second boss.

Those spider things are horrifying. Ran into one when travelling north on the long street en route to boss #2. Just kept running and dropping TNT until it died. I think it took 3-4 which is insane considering how much damage that TNT does.

Done and done! Took a bit longer than expected, but I took too many wrong turns in the latter half of the ufo, lol
