Strongly considering getting a Wii U. Need recommendations on games.

So far, on my list:

Super Mario World 3D
Bayonetta 2
Donkey Kong Country: Tropic Freeze
Xenoblade Chronicles X
Paper Mario: Color Splash

Any recommendations?

Mario Kart 8 (really excellent online multiplayer...hold off if you have the Switch with Mario Kart 8 Deluxe coming haha)
Super Mario Maker (infinite replayability)
Pikmin 3 (not sure your thoughts on the first two Pikmin but the third is just as good as the first two if you like them)
Nintendo Land (I really enjoyed this and if you can find it cheap its a great party game)
Lego City Undercover (a children's version of GTA...but it's REALLY fun haha)

  • New Super Mario Bros Wii U (solid mario game, 3d is better though)
  • Wonderful 101 is different and goofy fun

and if you don't have a Switch, get Breath of the Wild. Performance is fine on the Wii U

  • Pikmin 3 (You may as well pick up the Wii versions of the first two games while you're at it. This is one of my favorite series ever and the third game is incredible!)
  • Super Mario 3D World (I prefer this one over the "New" series. It's just a rock-solid Mario game, that's all you need to know.)
  • Lego City Undercover (As @WhitsEnd said, this is basically Lego GTA and while it might sound strange, it's very good.)
  • Mario Kart 8 (This is a no-brainer if you enjoy the series.)
  • Rayman Legends (This version has some neat tablet puzzles, so if you haven't played it, I'd go for it here.)
  • Nano Assault Neo (I have no idea if the e-shop is still online for Wii U, but this is a great indie game that I'm not sure is available on any other platform.)

I'm in the middle of replaying Tokyo Mirage Sessions, which is a real solid game! I fully recommend it.

Also echoing Tarzanslam. As a person that played Melee regularly for 14 years, Smash Bros on the Wii U may be the best one of the series. Get it!

@jwcooley - You and @darthbob2000 should come over soon. We're a little behind on gaming nights, so here's what all we have to cover:

  • Beat The Legend of Zelda
  • Beat The Guardian Legend
  • Sample a variety of Wii U games
  • Ruin our friendships with a few rounds of Super Bomberman R

We close on our house Friday. So I would anticipate that May would be a good time for me to finally get over to your new house.

I can recommend Freedom Planet on the Wii U too, seems overlooked but great port.

@jwcooley, let's figure out a May or June game night plan. As far as Wii U games go I am playing Yoshi's Wolley World now and it fun and deceptively difficult if you attempt to get items in each level.

Cannot recommend the following enough:

Pikmin 3 - Personal favorite and imo best in the series
TMS#FE - Incredible battle system and just an overall pretty good SMT/Persona spin-off. Lots of fun
Xenoblade Chronicles X - I know people generally hate it but I LOVE the soundtrack for this game. I think it gets a lot of things wrong but I dumped over 100 hours into it anyway. Loads of fun.
Super Mario Maker - This was really fun just because I grew up playing every Mario game. Great game overall.
