First off, many thanks once again to @dhobo for designing the new layout!

It's been a loooong time coming, but I'm happy to announce the arrival of the revamped Collection page! I approached this with the mindset that it was a complete rewrite and although I didn't technically have to rewrite all of the code, the UI is completely different and hopefully better able to provide the functionality that users are interested in. As with pretty much anything I push out, this is very much considered to be a "version 1 release" and it's definitely not complete. I have a laundry list of enhancements / tweaks that I'll be working on, but I wanted to get this out in front of everyone to play with before I dig in too deep.

The overarching theme for this release was to better optimize screen real estate so you can see more of your collection at once. The first thing you'll notice is the huge filters area has been greatly reduced and most of the filters are now available in a little popup. By far the most frequently used filters are keyword and platform, so those are still front and center, but everything else is available with the Filters button. For now, the list filter is also on the main page, but this was due to technical issues I chose to not tackle for this first release. The plan is to move that one into the popup as well. Speaking of the popup, I haven't done much in the way of cleaning it up. It's pretty much just the old filters in a new place. We have some ideas for presenting these a little better, so hopefully that will be cleaned up in the future.

When you get into the results, you'll notice it's no longer a table (unless you're using shelf view, which was never a table!) Previously, you could toggle between "list" and "shelf" view. Now there are three options:

  • Minimized - This is a new view that provides bare minimum info to optimize the amount of data you can see.
  • Expanded - This is essentially what replaced the old "list" option, though it looks completely different. This will show you all the data ever.
  • Shelf - This is exactly the same as it was before. And I mean that quite literally, I didn't touch shelf view at all, but it will hopefully be getting touched up soon as well

If you change the view dropdown while looking at your own collection, your preference will be saved. This works exactly like it did before when we just had the two icons. Regardless if you're in minimized or expanded view, you can always click on the "header" row (i.e. the area with the game name and platform) to toggle the "expanded" content. Please note that the expanded content is never available on mobile due to size constraints.

Since there's no longer a table, that means there are no column headers to click on for sorting. This is one of the biggest UI changes, so please let me know what you think about this. You can, of course, still use the sorting dropdown / icon to sort your data.

As always, let me know if you run into any issues or have any questions / feedback!

Everything seems to be fine except for I can't seem to see where your completion time or time played and price you bought the game for are. I see estimated value in shelf mode and average completion time in expanded mode but not your play time or the price that you spent on it. I hope both are added in expanded mode as it's the one I use and I like that kind of information about the games.

The new layout is a little bit different and I think liked the other layout and style to it before but I guess it's not fair to say if I it's good or not right now since I haven't used it for real purposes yet.

Is there still a way to sort by Rating/Difficulty/Average Time? I tried clicking around but it didn't sort the data.

@bezbot - Previously, your own completion time wasn't actually displayed here. The total number of completions you've entered, as well as the community's average time were, and they're both available on the new layout. The estimated value and amount you paid will both definitely be added back in

@CartoonFan - Rating is available in the sorting dropdown at the top of the table. Difficulty is actually something that's never been sortable, but I can look into adding it. You can kinda sort by Avg. Time by using the Quick Filters option at the very top of the page (side-note: this dropdown will eventually be moved somewhere more accessible) and selecting the "Shortest I haven't finished" option. Apparently Avg. Time was never in the sorting dropdown, so I will be sure to add that one so you don't have to rely on the Quick Filter.

Also, if you're using the site on a tablet, please bear with me, it's not really optimized for that screen size yet. I use the site all the time on my iPad, so I'm feeling the pain too

After finding out the shelf view wasn't functioning properly, I decided to work on the site this morning I just pushed out Hotfix #1, which contains the following fixes / improvements to the Collection page:

  • Shelf view should be stable once again! It was rendering fine, but none of the buttons were working properly because I made some minor naming convention changes and didn't realize I had broken everything here. My apologies! There's still one issue with shelf view, which is when you click on an existing tag, it's not filtering like it should. It's on my list though.
  • Avg. Time has been added to the sorting dropdown (So you don't have to use the Quick Filter to use it)
  • Difficulty has been added to the sorting dropdown (This is a brand new option and works exactly like rating. Keep in mind if you don't have a difficulty specified, it will always show at the top of the list, which is how rating works as well. You can always use the filter for "has difficulty" to get a more accurate representation of the data you've entered.)
  • Amount Paid and Estimated Value have been added to the expanded view (Only the collection owner can view this data, which is how it was previously. Estimated Value is always displayed in US Dollars since no currency conversion ever happens.)

disappointed that the "what game should I play" feature is gone, but I do like the look of it. I don't visit the page often, so can't say much more than that :P

The rando-game feature will return! I just hadn't found a place for it that doesn't look dumb in the new layout :P

I'm digging the expanded view. It seems like a good compromise between presenting information and compactness. The bigger notes section on the right is very useful for a compulsive note-maker like me, and will probably save a few trees from my depredations. It'd be great to see something similar for the completions page.

Edit: I've noticed that when you update tags on a game in expanded view it minimizes the entry for that game afterwards. Is this intended behavior?

@pachoarmadillo - The issue you're having after updating tags is not the intended behavior. It's on my list to fix, should be taken care of in the next release

@moho_00 - Just FYI the minimizing happens if you edit anything in the entry. It's not limited to tags.

Hotfix #2

I just pushed this out and it contains the following fixes / tweaks:

  • Increased the size of the box art in the expanded view. It should now have the same maximum height that it had before (125px). Width has been changed to be 100% to help out certain dimensions.
  • The "What should I play?" button has returned! As @dhobo mentioned, we don't have a permanent home for it yet, but my intention has always been to bring it back. I actually kinda forgot about it last weekend or I would've stuck it in temporarily like I did the Quick Filters
  • The Amount Paid value is now included on the shelf view
  • Reduced the minimum height of the minimized row by 10px. I had set it to what it was to get a more uniform look as edition / compilation names (not to mention longer game titles) are displayed. This change will cause certain rows to appear larger, but it should also save some space.
  • Fixed a bug where editing tags would ALWAYS return the minimized row. I was unable to recreate this behavior in any scenario other than editing tags. The issue here was I changed how the display mode is stored (now it's in a dropdown) and the edit tags functionality is actually in a separate piece of code and wasn't caught when I was updating names the other day.
  • Fixed a bug where the bulk edit checkbox would look wonky after editing certain things. This was actually a pre-existing bug before all of these changes, I just hadn't gotten to it yet
  • Tried to suppress the functionality where Chrome automatically scrolls to the bottom of the page if you use the Load More option. From what I can tell, this is Chrome-specific and only happens if you're truly scrolled to the bottom (or really close to it). What I did is mostly a hack and it's not as smooth as I'd like, but it was all I could do in my limited time this evening. Let me know what you guys think.

More to come this weekend!

Thinner row size: Looks good! (for shorter named titles at least, until the formatting is fixed later)
Load More Hack: Works well!
Derpy Checkboxes: Dederpified!

Collapsing Rows: Still happening after making changes, tags or otherwise. (Lists seem to be the only one that won't minimize it after a change.)

Only happens if my view selection is set to minimal view. If I have other entries manually expanded, they do not minimize, only the entry I've made an edit to.

I like the Expanded view and have a little feedback:

The icons for difficulty are larger than the text so they tend to sit lower than the bottom of the text which doesn't look quite right - would it be possible to shrink these to match the height of the text or vertically align the icons and the text along the center line?

The grey icons make it seem like some of the information isn't complete - and in some cases it isn't (i.e. completions, time, etc). I think it would look nicer if the grey icons were replaced with coloured versions when you enter a corresponding value - for example when you register a completion the grey diamond could be replaced with a blue one - this would have the added benefit of making it easier to view completions when looking through the expanded view.

@Ardraaken - I was playing around with colour in the expanded view prior to submitting the first mockup to moho_00. I was worried that maybe it would begin to suffer from colour overload if someone had everything filled in and opted to lean towards a less jarring icon tone for now.

It's definitely something I want to explore further after everything gets nailed down as far as layout and content go.

Thanks for the feedback!

@dhobo - A-ha! I had assumed you were in Expanded view. I see the bug now. Basically, whenever you perform (most) updates (lists and quick toggle being the exceptions, I think), the entire row is re-rendered since that's the easiest way to pull in the updates. I'm sending in whatever is selected in the dropdown (so in your case, Minimized) and that's how the row is rendered. I need to change that to send in whatever the status of the row you're editing is.

@Ardraaken - Regarding the difficulty icon, it's on my list to shrink down a bit. Those icons are actually a font that's used and technically, they are the same font size as the other text, but they are noticeably larger. That one should be fixed soon

Hotfix #3

Lots of fixes / tweaks with this one! Thanks everyone for your feedback, I think we're getting very close to having this new page settled!

  • Added some additional data elements to the expanded content and rearranged things a bit to place less emphasis on things such as region and generally just tidied up the content
  • Added a strategy guide toggle (we had this before)
  • Added a banner icon for denoting progress status (color-coded with a tooltip)
  • Replaced the difficulty icons to numeric values
  • Modified most of the user-specific pages so they no longer have the extra banner (the one that would say things like "moho_00's Collection"), which recovered about 45px worth of height on each page
  • Fixed a bug where if you edited a row, it would always render in whatever display mode was selected in the dropdown (i.e. your default), but now it will render however it was previously displayed on your screen
  • Fixed a bug where certain pieces of data would be missing when you performed an update
  • Fixed a wrapping issue with the game name

I kinda miss having the notes section on the far right instead of below. It felt more balanced that way with the tags on the far left and the rest nestled in between. Would it be possible to squish the rating, difficulty, and completions a little closer and put the notes back on the end? Those three elements seem more spaced out than they need to be, and having the notes on the end would fill up that white space at the end. Assuming, of course, that I'm not the only one who liked it that way. Something about having them under everything else just looks messy to me.

I was wondering, with the new view I find that I am only able to access the Quick Edit window, but I can no longer find a way to get to the Full Edit page. Is that page no longer in use?

As I remember, it listed the completions and had the Loaned Out and Strategy Guide fields which are not in Quick Edit but are still possible when adding a new game.

@Nocmin - I think the Quick Edit modal will be the long-term solution, but as you mentioned, it is indeed missing some fields (and could use a bit of clean-up in general). I meant to add a way to get to the full edit page, but obviously I forgot! I've added a new link called "Full Edit" under the orange gear icon that can be used for the time-being (will go live in the next release). It's possible I will retire that page once the Quick Edit modal is revamped, but that will probably be a while yet
