I've been gaming for 30+ years now and despite the number of hours I've logged during that time, there are some genres that I just can't seem to grasp. It's not that I dislike the games I've tried, but rather I just can't seem to git gud. I thought it might be interesting to see if others out there have similar experiences.

For me, I'm absolutely awful at any sort of game that involves flying. I'm not just talking realistic flight sims here, I mean anything with flying. So that includes arcade style games like After Burner and Ace Combat, space shooters like Colony Wars and Descent, and of course realistic games like the old Jane's combat games.

I've been trying to get better at them over the past couple of years and I've only slightly improved. I've managed to finish Air Combat and Ace Combat 2. I tried playing through Ace Combat 4, but I had a bit more difficulty with that one. I've tried Colony Wars and Descent 3 and I could barely hit anything.

I'm not really sure what it is about those games that I struggle with. I suspect it's the controls since I had Soviet Strike as a kid and while it was a tough game, I managed to get through it with some steady progress. But it doesn't control anything like the games I mentioned.

Another genre I'm really bad at would be any sort of driving game where you have to fire weapons. So games like Twisted Metal and Vigilante 8. I'm usually decent at racing games, so I don't think it's the driving aspect. But much like those flight games I mentioned before, I think the controls are too much for my brain to grasp. I can't seem to steer my vehicle, aim at opponents, manage my inventory (switching weapons and such), and dodge enemy fire.

So has anyone else identified a genre they struggle with? And if so, have you ever tried to practice to get better or do you just avoid them altogether?

I'm awful at racing games. I love them, but if I don't devote my gaming time to a specific racing game exclusively to maintain a semblance of skill/competence, it's like I go right back to square one and noob it up.

I keep telling myself it's because I'm not great with fine control on analog sticks, but I bet having a racing wheel wouldn't help me much.

One of my favorite games was Gran Turismo 3 A-Spec. I was bad at it, so I made a new game out of it. How much could I trick out a PT Cruiser and how far could I get with it. By the time I hit a wall in terms of being able to win races, I basically had a rocket with no steering for all the good it did me, lol

Other than that, most racing games end the same way for me. I start inventing new swear combos to yell at my tv and get pretty inventive sometimes and rage quit after I realize it's not worth getting so angry over a game.

Not a fan of First Person-Shooters or modern adventure games that are free-roaming aka sandbox /open-world genre. Just can't get into those games, the stories, narration, and overall gameplay feels tiresome to me personally. Not much of a fan of racing simulators as well, arcade racers on the other hand are super fun !!

I still can't beat Halo 2 on Legendary. I can't even get past the second level.

A little late to the thread, but I've always been bad at games that require patience and mastery like Dark Souls : ( A part of me does sometimes want to dedicate the time and effort necessary to improve at these kinds of games, but since I mainly play games to be immersed in a good story, the raw skill aspect of gaming doesn't really grab me and make me want to try more than a few times...

The only exception for me tends to be 3D fighters like Tekken and Soul Calibur, though... Maybe it's my competitive nature, but I have no problem picking up characters that interest me, learning their movelists and hitting the practice lab until I can take down my friends, lol.

I hate MOBAs as well, and I'm just plain terrible at fighting games.

I just can't do rhythm games. Partly reflexes, but also I just can't summon the motivation to learn them as it just seems tedious, anyway. There's not really much story or context. Almost as if it boils gaming too far down to it's essense and reminds me I'm pressing buttons at certain times and calling it entertainment, lol

Classic fighting games with all the complex button combos that I don't understand. I love Smash Bros, but it's got enough platforming to make me enjoy it more... I'm still not great at it, though.

I suck at games like Dark Souls where you die a lot and supposedly 'learn' to do better by doing the same level over and over and over. I can't seem to ever really learn fast enough and just end up giving up in frustration, hahaha. Just don't have the patience & possibly the potential to learn them, hahaha, idk

I'm bad at a lot of genres lol. I'm terrible at puzzle games, I've only played one that I really enjoyed and that was Braid. I'm also bad at Dark Souls like games, I think it's largely because I don't have the patience to learn the mechanics of the game.

I struggle with games like Dark Souls or Bloodborne. I can see the appeal of it, but I find it to hard.
I was going to say that I struggle with RPGs as well, but I improved on games like Final Fantasy or Kingdom Hearts, so RPGs are no big problems for me anymore.
