Got out my Sega Saturn and 3-D controller and played the first two missions today. Thoughts on the game haven't changed substantially since I played a little bit of it a few years back. Amazing music, 10/10 premise, really fun characters and setting, and fab level design, but struggles so much performance-wise on the Saturn, occasionally dropping into straight up slideshow territory. And as impressive as it is that it runs on the console at all, I think it definitely should have been a Dreamcast title instead.

Still loving it, mind, and it's one of those games that makes me realise all over again just how much I miss Sega of old. But yeah, can't help but imagine what might have been had it been reworked for Dreamcast like Shenmue rather than rushed to market as the Saturn was on its way out. The roads not travelled. Still close to the top of my list of desired remakes / sequels, as it's a premise that would benefit so much from more powerful hardware.

Also, finding it quite interesting to see just how much it influenced Phantasy Star Online. The straight up Burning Rangers mission in that game aside, the costumes and environments feel so, so similar across both games, and the similarities are even more striking when you look at some of the early concept art for PSO in its various art books. Makes a really interesting companion piece as a big fan of PSO and Phantasy Star in general.

Finished tonight. Feels almost like a tech demo given how short it is, and scenario feels like it had major cuts made to get it out in time. But a super-charming and likeable game despite its many issues, and glad I finally played properly. Will probably play the other scenario at some point.

I don't remember when I originally purchased this game, but it wasn't too far after launch and while it certainly has some performance issues, it wasn't too bad overall...at least for the time. Back then though, I was used to frequent frame drops (even on PS1 and N64...Banjo-Tooie in particular was borderline unplayable for me). It's definitely a short game (and relatively easy too), so it's hard to recommend these days with its insane price tag. Despite it all though, it's just a fun and nifty game that is very late '90s in, well, everything!

Haha, to be honest I found it pretty rough going even for the time. Certain areas seem to cope okay, but there are many stretches where the framerate seriously tanked. Was especially bad when there were enemies onscreen, and final battle also chugged a lot. But yeah, like you say, extremely fun in all aspects and has huge 90s energy that I loved. And easy enough that you could push through the issues. Would have preferred to see it on the Dreamcast personally, and feel like it would have benefitted from the longer development time in terms of content as well, but I really love the Saturn as a console, and it's nice little addition to its library. Would be lovely to see an indie dev take a crack at something similar if it's not already been done.
