NOTE: The whole point of the Development Updates forum is to bring potential site enhancements to the community to collect feedback. I can't guarantee every feature will be implemented or everyone's request will make it in, but I'll strive to include as much feedback as possible. If a feature makes it beyond the "idea" phase and I start working on it, I'll provide updates here, as necessary.

This particular feature originally started as the Game Club feature we talked about in another thread. After getting some feedback, it made sense to expand upon the feature to encourage others to participate. The main problem with a game club is you have to pick a game that will work for everyone, which is highly unlikely. This would be even more noticeable given the small size of our community.

So the evolution of the game club is game challenges. The concept remains the same, a game is chosen and one or more users play through it. The difference is, instead of having ONE challenge for all of Completionator, the challenges are up to you guys to create! So now if you and a friend want to play a game in a club format, one of you just starts a challenge and invites the other one to join.

That's the basic premise, so what I need you guys for is to help fill out the details.

  • Does this sound fun / useful / cool at all?
  • There will be some sort of discussion / commenting feature that's specific to each challenge, so participants can discuss. I could also do something so you can denote spoiler text.
  • What type of security features would be needed? Should anyone be able to join a challenge? Do you want to make them invite-only? Friends-only? I kinda like the idea of being able to search for challenges by game, so if I'm about to start playing a game, I can find others that are playing it right now too.
  • I've considered allowing you to create a playlist of sorts for the challenge, so you could play through all of the Final Fantasy games in a row, if you wanted. This would likely not make it in the first version, but interested in feedback on it.
  • I'm thinking challenges will need an expiration date, does that make sense?
I'd like to integrate this feature with the playthrough and completion features. The basic flow would be to start a challenge, log your time via a playthrough (which would automatically be created for you when you accept a challenge), complete your challenge / playthrough, which creates a completion time (assuming you've logged it) and marks the game as finished.

Needless to say, this is a pretty large feature and is easily the biggest of the ideas I've posted so far. So if you have any thoughts or feedback, please let me know! The last thing I want to do is waste a lot of time on something nobody will use :P

Challenges are a great idea but I always find myself not playing what everybody else is playing. Also, I'd say that if/when we have a more robust user base, this might be a good idea. Until then, I'd say this should be at the back of your list.
