Description

This is my personal list of the best games I played this year. Decided to create a 1 game per series rule for the sake of including games that aren't just Mario, Sonic, and Crash. Also the games don't have to be ones I've beaten, though most will be.

Mario Party Superstars

I am a massive fan of the Mario Party games, and they have been in a bit of a rough patch since NDcube took over. Super Mario Party took a massive step in the right direction, but this is where they really got it right. With a great selection of items, minigames, and boards, I have been having tons of fun playing it. Combine that with great online, achievements, and tons of quality of life and improvements, and you have one of my favorite games in the series.

Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury

I had a touch choice, as I also played through Super Mario Galaxy this year and really enjoyed it. But I have to be honest, I prefer this game. 3D World was already an excellent Mario game on Wii U, but the many tweaks do a lot to make it more enjoyable. And then there's a whole side-game that is also a total blast to go through.

Sonic Generations

This is a game I have played many times before, but this year was the first time I 100% completed it, in addition to playing it on an actually decent computer. This remains my favorite Sonic game. The sense of speed is incredible, with levels that have tons of branching pathways and shortcuts, this game is a total blast from start to finish. While I also really enjoyed playing Colors Ultimate this year, I will always prefer Generations.

Crash Bandicoot: N-Sane Trilogy

It was really tough to choose between this and Crash Bandicoot 4, but N. Sane Trilogy just barely takes it. While Crash 2 was annoying, I adored the first game and the third was also tons of fun. Crash is a series I had been needing to play for years so I'm glad that I finally got around to it this year.

The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess HD

Despite being a huge Nintendo fan for my whole life, I hadn't really grown up playing Zelda. It was always a series I wanted to get into, but I just couldn't. That is, until Breath of the Wild (which is now one of my favorite games of all time). It's taken me a few years to finally really get going on another Zelda game, and this is a game I've been playing off and on throughout the whole year, but I have been really enjoying this game. The story is engaging, puzzles are challenging but fair, and the exploration is a lot of fun. Hopefully I can actually beat it before the end of the year.

Blinx: The Time Sweeper

Now we get to the more obscure games! Blinx is such a neat and creative platformer. The graphics are really good for the time, the soundtrack is great, and the time powers are a lot of fun to use. The biggest issue is the difficulty, especially the original release (which is what I played). Some enemies just have way too much health, and the later levels really test you. I love me a really hard game though, so I mostly liked this about the game. If you're looking for a really tough 3D Platformer, definitely get this game.

Scribblenauts Unlimited

This is a game I have wanted to play through ever since it came out, better late than never right? This is just a really fun and relaxing puzzle game that lets you make pretty much anything. Just a really solid game.

Zapper: One Wicked Cricket

There's not really much for me to say here, it's a short Frogger clone that is pretty well designed.

The Henry Stickmin Collection

This game is super simple and is more about the humor than the actual gameplay, but I still found it to be pretty enjoyable.

Scaler

The choice for #10 was really tough. It was between this, Crazy Taxi 3, and Panzer Dragoon Orta. I really did enjoy all of these, but my favorite genre is platformers, so I chose Scaler. A really solid and underrated platformer that has some great visuals. Main issue is the turret sections and the forced fighting arenas, which keep it from being higher on the list. But I still had a pretty good time with it.
