Top 10 Games I played in 2022
Description
Here we are again! I made my first top 10 for last year and I enjoyed the process. This year's list was way tougher to make, as I played a decent amount of games that released this year in addition to my backlog and I really enjoyed a ton of them. Same 1 game per series rule as last year's list, along with a no-repeat rule.
Honorable Mentions: Kao the Kangaroo (2022) and Five Nights at Freddy's: Security Breach.
Kirby and the Forgotten Land
While some games have come close, this game takes the crown. While distant enemies have weird low fps, and the game is just 30fps, everything else was wonderful. Beautiful visuals for Switch standards, an amazing soundtrack, tons of content, and a perfect translation of Kirby's gameplay into 3D, this was a blast from start to finish and is not just my favorite Kirby game, but my favorite game that I played this year.
Astro's Playroom
I had been waiting on getting a PS5 due to thinking $500 was a lot and I had hoped it's price would drop. Finally got one this year after realizing that wouldn't happen, and this game was my biggest reason for wanting the console. While the game is short, it's a truly excellent 3D Platformer that takes full advantage of the PS5 and DualSense with an excellent soundtrack to boot.
Pac-Man World: Re-PAC
Pac-Man World Re-Pac is a fantastic remake of the original PS1 game that fixes the vast majority of it's problems. While the 50fps issue is massive blemish, I was able to solve it thanks to playing it on PC and really enjoyed finally going through and beating the game after years of the PS1 version sitting in my backlog.
Klonoa Phantasy Reverie Series
Klonoa is a series I've heard great things about for years but the insane prices have kept them as nothing more than "holy grail" items that I may pirate and finish someday. Thanks to this remake, it wasn't necessary and I got to them this year and immediately wished I had played the games sooner. While some cutscene animation leaves a bit to be desired, and Klonoa 2 has some levels that slightly overstay their welcome, both titles were a ton of fun with great soundtracks and better than average stories for platformers. I highly recommend this.
Resident Evil 2 (2019)
During October I decided to try out the Resident Evil series as I've heard great things about the series, even though it isn't usually my sort of game. Ended up skipping over Resident Evil HD as it wasn't my thing and I'm happy I did because I really loved Resident Evil 2 Remake. Excellent controls, a fantastic map that ensures you never get lost, fair combat and difficulty, and an interesting story made it one of my favorites from the year.
LEGO The Incredibles
This spot was between this game and LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga, and while I enjoyed Skywalker Saga, I was a bit disappointed by it and I found this game to be considerably better. It nails everything you expect from a LEGO title with the exception of odd placement for the music tracks and a total lack of music from Incredibles 2. Fun, well designed levels that take advantage of every character well alongside an enjoyable open world.
Super Mario Land
This spot was between this game and it's sequel, and I actually liked this one better. While Mario Land 2 had more interesting powerups and stage design, it suffered from floaty control and a very zoomed in view. Mario Land is a perfect translation of the series to the limited Game Boy hardware with a truly fantastic soundtrack and some interesting locales.
Sonic Frontiers
I'm currently still making my way through this game but I'm really liking it so far, more so than Origins which was also a contender. It does a pretty good job of combining Boost Sonic with an Open World Sandbox with the expectedly great soundtrack and mostly nice visuals (excluding some obnoxious pop-in). Some enemies can be a bit annoying to deal with, there's a bit of jank, and cutscene animation is lacking even compared to Forces. But I'm still really enjoying the game,
The Stanley Parable: Ultra Deluxe
This was my first time playing this, it's definitely more of an experience than a game, and your experience will have a lot to do with how much you already know about it. I had seen tons of videos of the original and that degraded the game for me somewhat, but the UD content was far more enjoyable.
