My Top 10 for 2022
Description
Wow, I started out with 18 and had to really pair down! So sad cutting games like Disco Elysium and Black Book, or another fav that surprised me, Mario Rabbids. I'm mostly a handheld gamer these days, using the Steam Deck recently, but I'm still building that library and most of my turn based games are on the Switch.
Keeping this list mostly turn based, I'm leaving out some other favs (MGSV, Fallout(s), We Happy Few, etc) to make the list more true to my gaming habits.
Divinity: Original Sin II - Definitive Edition
This game is amazing. Replay able, endlessly customizable. Uses the environment for turn based combat better than any other game. I could go on and on about how great this game is, but suffice to say (it IS #1 after all) it's a pretty perfect example of the way a turn-based game should be!
ATOM RPG
This is an amazing little hidden gem. Think of original Fallout or Wastelands 2. A huge main questline, open world-ish (you move thru the map into different open world 'zones') and lots of interactable items. You can also trade with most anyone, which is super handy.
Shadowrun Trilogy
Shadowrun Returns was my very first foray into turn based combat, many years ago when it came out on Google Play store. I remember slaving over the controls on a tablet!
Wasteland 2: Director's Cut
Another massive turn based game, I'm about to start #3!
Sentinels of Freedom
I was unsure of this game, but after a half hour or so I was hooked. Very unique turn based battling that utilizes a kind of 'pausing'. The graphics are loud and bright, like a comic book. Some of the battles went on and on for way too long, but great character customization.
Encased
I just started this, and I really enjoy it, however I'm having trouble with the combat. There is no way to use cover, unless you save AP, and AP is so scarce in the beginning it really can't be wasted on some extra defense points. If it wasn't for that issue, the game would be way higher. I can't even kill some roaches without getting overwhelmed! Also, a lot of the quests require certain stats that can't be raised by perks, only levelling. Aside from these issues, it has a unique story, good graphics, and interesting characters.
The Dungeon Of Naheulbeuk: The Amulet Of Chaos
Party-based dungeon type crawler, and turn based, with a lot of humor! Sound required ;-)
XCOM 2 Collection
XCom 2 is one of the hardest turn based games I've played. It requires real strategy and if you aren't careful you'll end up stuck on a quest. That said, it's the epitome of the genre and requires a spot on my list.
Grimshade
The graphics in this game are phenomenal, but character customization is lacking. Story, check, characters, check, world, check. It's almost like they were building the game to allow for more customization, but then abandoned the plans.
Pillars of Eternity
A turn-based-and-pause game, I played this right after Divinity Original Sin, so the bar was high. I usually don't care for this kind of combat, as I enjoy the relaxing and strategic nature of true turn based. But this game had great graphics and endless character customization that made it really fun. Also, having a kind of 'home base' to work on in the game is a nice addition.
