Description

Best games I played in the year 2023. About half of them are games I actually replayed since my childhood, but I felt were deserving of being in this list. There is a bunch of games that I wanted to play or at least try, but hadn't the time to do so (e.g. Amnesia: The Bunker and Alan Wake 2). Oh well, there's always next year. This is my second ever list like this on Completionator, woohoo!

L.A. Noire

This was easily the best game I played this year, and despite it being my first playthrough of it, it quickly made its way onto my Top 10 Favorite Games of All Time list. It's just so well made. The atmosphere, plot, cases... it is clear the devs did their homework, and they did it well. Definitely one of the best Rockstar classics that anyone should play. My only gripe was the difficult, or rather lackthereof. There is no punishment at all for failing a case, which was a big letdown.

Bully: Scholarship Edition

Another masterpiece from Rockstar's catalogue. This was a replay for me, but it was my first time playing it 100% through. Although I do not recommend and did not enjoy completing it to 100%, the base game and content is great and there hasn't been a game as unique since (literally a school simulator). The characters and writing are a very underrated aspect of this game however. Gary is a surprisingly deep and well written individual, and the rest of the cast have their own fun quirks as well. That being said, the game does have early rockstar jank, so beware of crashes and the like.

Grand Theft Auto V

Easily the best modern GTA. I enjoyed this one 10x more than GTA IV, since unlike IV, it prioritized gameplay and accessibility over absurd realism. Story was alright for what it was, though nowhere near on the levels of IV unfortunately. The map is the most beautiful rendition of Los Santos and felt alive, and there was a lot to do in the game. There is a reason it's the second most sold game of all time and still relevant to this day, as despite it being a decade old, it holds up better than a lot of modern games nowadays.

Plants vs. Zombies

Another childhood game of mine, this one is basically a yearly replay for me. I hadn't played it since 2020, and I felt the itch to play it again so I used my streams of it as an excuse. Amazing game. Love it. I am not even a tower defense fan and yet this game really got me hooked, as I'm sure it did with many others. The art style, the timeless music, the simple yet fun and addicting gameplay... Everything about this game is fantastic.

Voices of the Void

A very underrated indie horror game currently in early stages of development. You look for signals from space, but not all is as it seems...
The uncanny feel of the game, the atmosphere, the random creepy events, all of it is executed superbly. It is just the right mix of creepy, comfy and goofy. Highly recommend you check this one out, it's free but you can always support the dev, and I highly recommend you do. They've done a fantastic job so far and I am excited to see how the game develops.

inFamous 2

Much better than the original, this was a sequel done right. The controls are more fluid, the gameplay more varied and fun. About the only thing the og game has over this is better good/evil choices and map atmosphere. But overall, this is still a very fun game

Sly 2: Band of Thieves

Another case of a sequel beating the original. This game has twice the content of the original, fun hub levels to explore and do the missions in and it allows you to play as all three of the gang rather than just Sly himself, with each one having their own unique quirks and gameplay. Somehow the story also feels a bit more mature. Overall, great 3D platformer that any fan of the genre should absolutely get their hands on.

Just Cause 2

This is an oddball. I played this back in my highschool days and I remember loving it, but now that I replayed it, I am no longer a fan. All you do is blow stuff up and repeat the same menial tasks over and over... Completing the story was ok, but going for 100% was hell... maybe that contributed to my newly found distaste for the game, but I feel like there's other factors to consider: Pretty looking map that doesn't feel very alive (I guess Rockstar AI spoiled me), lackluster story and writing (I know that's not the focus of the game, but it's a missed opportunity imo) and repetitive tasks. Still, it was a fun time waster to play for 5-15 mins a day, and the grappling hook traversal never gets old.

Counter-Strike: Source

Considering I hardly play any multiplayer games, this is quite an odd thing for me to put here, but it's just so well designed I had to give it some credit. I used to play this and og CS when I was a kid, and damn has it aged like fine wine. Still one of the best strategic shooters out right now.

Team Fortress 2

First time playing it, and although I am not a fan of most of the gamemodes (domination style gameplay where you capture points has never been a thing I was particularly into), the game is undeniably well made and I can see how it can still garner such an active playerbase all of these years later.
