My Top 10 Games played in 2024

Disco Elysium: The Final Cut
Finally picked it up after hearing numerous recommendations from my friends. Haven't played anything similar before so I had to get used to the gameplay and stuff at the start but it didn't take long. The plot was a bit too political for my tastes but overall I had fun with running around, developing my MC and discovering information about his past, observing characters' interactions and everything else. I'm glad the game didn't force me to drink or use violence even though the setting would sometimes suggest that happening. Overall, a fun play but didn't really make me go "wow!", just a pleasant rpg with lots to do.
Persona 3 Reload
I played Persona 3 Portable what feels like a thousand years ago and since then, even if I liked the game, I've never been a huge fan of it. Besides the upgraded visuals and some new similar to P5's mechanics, P3R doesn't differ much from the older versions of the game, which I'm not sure is a good thing for me, a person who's never been very into it. I quite like the "new" music with the new vocalist and I also like most, if not all, of the gameplay changes that didn't exist in the older versions of Persona 3 - the story events that are supposed to be sad are also doing their job pretty well in Reload, so that's good. It's hard for me to guess what a new player would say about this game and its story as I played Reload while already knowing everything that will happen and couldn't really get into it, still, my playthrough that took me a bit over 120h (a bit of it afk) was fun and as a Persona series fan, I'm glad the game is now available to a bigger crowd of people. Personally, the thing I am most disappointed about in P3R is the achievements - after completing the sometimes VERY challenging in-game achievements in Persona 5 Royal I hoped there will be some like these in Reload too but clearly I hoped for too much as achievements in Reload are mostly story and progression based and there is almost 0 challenge in them without even the existence of the basic "complete 100% Persona compendium" achievements that exists in other Persona titles.
The best thing about P3R tho? It has a very well done, barking Koromaru who is the best boy and you might as well play this game just for him.
Risk of Rain Returns
I'm a big fan of the second Risk of Rain so I decided to try Returns too. At the very start the game was so frustrating to me I thought it may just not be for me, I couldn't understand how to move so I wouldn't get hit, when to attack and when/if to run and I was having 0 fun from my runs. With time though, I learned to play better and handle most of the characters and nowadays I can play Returns for fun. The game is still more difficult than RoR2 though, time is more of essence here than in the second game, looping is more dangerous and playing Monsoon difficulty feels almost like suicide lol. Oh, and the Providance Trials, where you're put in a fixed map, having fixed skills and items to pick up, having to do a specific thing that you would probably never have to do in a normal run, all within a time limit - I HATE those and I'm glad there isn't an achievement for getting a gold rank on all of them cause I was already at my wit's end trying to get the needed 15 crowns for another achievement. My favorite survivors to play in Returns are Pilot, Miner and Loader.
Hi-Fi Rush
A bit difficult (especially for those who don't feel the rhythm I suppose) but very fun play. At the start I thought that I was bad at the combat cause I was either getting D in time and A in just timing or vice versa but it seems now like it was the case of getting used to the gameplay cause at the end I was SLAAAYING it (except for the bosses maybe...). Fun characters though I wish CNMN had a bit more presence in the story. I'm not exactly a fan of putting a lot of content into the post-game in games though and, not gonna lie, the amount of activities in Hi-Fi rush's postgame scared me a bit lol. Both the post game content and most of the achievements are (very, even) challenging which I guess is good for people looking for a real challenge in this game but for me it's a bit too much. Nonetheless a very fun and colorful game.
DREDGE
A nice short game to pass the time, pretty chill unless you swim out on the waters when it's dark lol. Got spooked a few times but usually when it was my first time seeing the specific monster and I didn't know what to expect of it and how to deal with it. Besides that it was a fun play with quite a lot of side-quests to complete. I didn't really get hooked on the plot but it was okay. I've been wanting to play this game for a long time and I think I was expecting something more of it but I still liked what I got.
Crime Scene Cleaner
The game was very chill for what topic it concerned. Ost to chill to in the background, no time limit, no pressure, mop in hand and just go and try to clean this bloody kitchen without additionally breaking anything in the meantime. Cleaning everything perfectly and finding the secrets on your own felt satisfying. Plot was very simple, almost nonexistent but the last scene after the credits in the last chapter felt good. There is an achievement for petting the dog multiple times and the dog is cute, 10/10 game.
Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective
Everything in this game tells you it was made by the same people that made Ace Attorney, lol. Not a problem for me, rather it's something that made me interested in Ghost Trick in the first place. Fun play, the way in which puzzles in this game work is original and it was satisfying to complete them on my own. Puzzles after ch10 became a bit too convoluted for my tastes sometimes but still it wasn't like they were super difficult. Overall puzzle difficulty was very nice for me, though I assume they might prove not enough of a challenge for people looking for more difficult ones. Ghost Trick's plot intrigued me at the start and I was interested to learn the answers to my questions but the final explanation of everything in the last chapter of the game proved to be a little bit too much for me, even considering that I expected the plot to have some weird and/or crazy plot twists (I mean, I played all AA games so..). Also, what might've influenced my opinion about the plot is the fact that overall I'm not a fan of talking/fully sentient/conscious animals/pets in fiction, which was an important theme in Ghost Trick. Like I already said, it was a fun play with achievements easy to max out, would recommend.
The Case of the Golden Idol
I wasn't super good at this game but I still felt sad after I finished all the cases, DLC included. Original in both gameplay and presentation with a consistent and interesting plot. Some plot revelations even made me go "0:"! lol. I didn't like the last cases both in the main game and in the DLCs much as I felt that they provided too little information for the situations they wanted me to solve but at the same time I wouldn't be surprised if it was a case just for me as I'm not good at thinking outside the box and drawing conclusions from insinuations. The game has a built-in hint system which is great for when you feel stuck but for me these weren't enough sometimes and if I hadn't helped myself with the hints from the internet I'm not sure if I'd ever pass some scenarios. I think it could be a great game for people wanting a thinking challenge, but I'd recommend it even for those who like mysteries but feel a little silly (like me lol).
