Description

Every game breaking glitch I can find that either prevents progress without an easy fix, or literally just breaks the game/hardware. (feel free to comment with any additional glitches or information for me to add)
Sorted by alphabetical order of the game titles.

Action 52 (1991)

Some of the games cannot be finished. For example, Ooze freezes near the end of level 3.

Age of Empires: The Age of Kings

DS version - Entering a name with less than 4 characters can corrupt save files and, if the game is reset, can brick the game card. (instead of fixing this, the publishers somehow thought that putting a piece of paper telling you not to do this in later printings was enough).

Anthem

Early updates of the PS4 version - Could crash while saving to the hard drive resulting in the database needing to be rebuilt in safe mode. (this was fixed through updates)

Ar tonelico: Melody of Elemia

During Misha's route, an item appears between two cutscenes. If the item is taken after the first cutscene but before the second, it can skip a cutscene and cause a character to disappear from the area, preventing progress in the story. This can be avoided by approaching the item slowly and without jumping to ensure that the second cutscene plays.

Batman: Arkham Origins

When players die in certain areas of the game or during certain bosses, they will infinitely respawn in a void.

Bubble Bobble: Revolution

Early North American version - The level 30 boss will not spawn in early North American printings of the game, making every level after it inaccessible. (This was fixed in later printings.)

Cheetahmen II

A glitch prevents the Cheetahmen Aries levels from loading unless the game starts on them.

Cyberpunk 2077

V1.1 only - Dialogue in the "Down on the Street" mission will not start, preventing story progress. (this was not present in V1.0 but was later fixed through updates)

Dead Space (2023)

There are several game breaking bugs in this game including:
- Doors will occasionally become permanently stuck on standby, halting progress.
- Certain characters will be unable to be met, halting story progress.
- Occasionally loading screens can be infinite after the player dies (this can be fixed by deleting the last autosave)
- Chapter 9 can sometimes not show prompts saying the player's completed it, halting progress. (this is more common on the Xbox and PlayStation versions)
- Items in chapter 7 needed to be used can disappear
- Power cells can disappear in certain chapters (if the PC version of the game is installed on SSD)

Dennis the Menace

Amiga A500 version only - The final level has a jump that is impossible to make. This was done on purpose because the developers didn't have enough time to add the final boss and ending.

Dexter's Laboratory: Deesaster Strikes!

Unpatched version - In the final level, a key item will disappear after using it, making progression impossible. This can be fixed by using cheat codes. The developers allowed players to send in their cartridges to patch the game to remove the glitch, however the company is now defunct.

Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest

Dropping and picking up a barrel as soon as it breaks in the Castle Crush stage before throwing the invisible barrel can cause save data corruption, corruption of the save file screen (preventing any file from loading), and overheating the console or setting it on fire.

The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion

The a-bomb glitch slows down or freezes animations and can prevent doors from opening. This can make the game difficult to play or prevent progress.

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim

Earlier PS3 version updates - Save files could stack on top of each other causing the game to slow down significantly. This was fixed through updates however some players reported the issue still occurring after updating.

EVE Online

Earlier updates of the PC version - The Trinity expansion used to delete the Windows boot file, preventing your computer from booting. (this was fixed through updates and later printings)

Fallout 76

Earlier updates - Consoles and PCs would randomly brick while playing (this was fixed through updates)
Beta version - A bug on the Bethesda Launcher could delete the entire beta.

Fallout: New Vegas

The game can autosave can occur while dying, causing the player to infinitely die when loading into the game.
Additionally, the PC version can autosave while crashing, causing the save data to be corrupted.

Far Cry 2

Upon reaching 27% completion, sometimes story NPCs can fail to spawn. This can be fixed by reloading to an earlier save and trying again.

19

Gladiator

Final boss is invincible. This was done on purpose as the developers ran out of memory to include an ending.

Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas

Madd Dogg can kill himself at the start of the mission preventing story progress. It was previously rumoured to be caused by cheating but some non-cheaters have had it happen while some extensive cheaters have never seen it.

21

Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas - The Definitive Edition

Repeatedly drinking Sprunk can cause your game to crash. If the game autosaves during the crash, your save file will corrupt.
Additionally, the Madd Dogg glitch (listed above in the original game) is still present.

Grand Theft Auto: Vice City

Early prints of the PS2 and PC versions only - Saving in the Cherry Poppers Ice Cream Factory will corrupt your save file. (this was fixed in later printings)

Guitar Hero II

NTSC and Xbox 360 versions only (Technically not game breaking, just 100% breaking) - The expert version of Trogdor the Burninator from Homestar Runner is impossible to hit all of the notes in because the strum limit is 15 notes per second while the song plays 17 notes per second. This issue is not present on non-Xbox 360 PAL versions.

Jak X: Combat Racing

On certain models of the PS2, autosave may randomly occur indefinitely. This can cause the save data to corrupt when resetting or turning off the console. The data can be impossible to delete creating 984 kb of wasted space on the memory card. (this doesn't occur on some PS2 models and was fixed in the Greatest Hit version. The Platinum version however is still affected.)

Just Cause 2

Technically not game breaking, just 100% breaking. - The 6 collectables given to the player at the end of mission 6 are never given to the player because it ends at the same time that mission 7 starts. Additionally, a water tower does not appear to spawn in the map. Both of these make 100% completion impossible without mods.

The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword

Version 1.0 only - During the Song of the Hero quest, if the player completes the Thunder Dragon and speaks to Golo for a second time, the following story events won't occur, preventing story progress. (This was fixed through the "The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword Save Data Update Channel" however you cannot download it through the Wii Shop Channel anymore because of its shutdown. It was also fixed in the Nintendo Switch version of the game.)

The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess

Older versions – When saving in the cannon room of Ronaldo’s Basement in Kakeriko Village, a character needed to interact with will disappear and Link cannot leave the room. (this was fixed in later versions)

Legendary

PC version - The player will clip through the elevator to the final boss. This can be fixed by editing the game files.

The Lion King

PC version - The player can often fall off the head of the giraffe at the end of the 2nd level, leaving them stuck.

Luigi's Mansion

GameCube version only - After beating the Portrait Ghost, if you leave the room and re-enter without collecting the key, the key will disappear making it impossible to reach the final boss. This can only be fixed if you reload the save file. If you saved after re-entering however, you cannot collect the Boo, making 100% completion impossible. This glitch was fixed in the 3DS remake.

Metroid

3DS Virtual Console version (early 3DS firmware updates only) - Entering "ENGAGE RIDLEY MOTHER F***ER" on the password screen can brick 3DS consoles. (this was fixed through 3DS firmware updates) - Note: most versions simply crash or reset if you enter this code. The NES version loads and is playable but it is unstable so express caution.

Metroid: Other M

After acquiring the ice beam and defeating the next two enemies, if you then backtrack before progressing the next door will permanently close. (Nintendo used to offer to fix save files on SD cards sent in however this was eventually stopped.)

Mighty No. 9

Wii U V1.1.0 only - Firing your weapon or returning to the title screen can brick your console. (this was fixed through updates)

34

Nintendo 64 Expansion Pak

This is being used as a stand-in for the N64 library in general. - Prolonged cartridge tilting can brick games and consoles.

Nioh

Creating a new character can delete save data.

36

PlayStation Underground Holiday 2004 Demo Disc

Playing the Viewtiful Joe 2 demo will reformat all memory cards connected to the console.

Pokémon Red

MissingNo and other glitched Pokémon can corrupt save data and even the rom on both cartridge and emulator.

Pocket Monsters Midori

MissingNo and other glitched Pokémon can corrupt save data and even the rom on both cartridge and emulator.

Pokémon Blue

MissingNo and other glitched Pokémon can corrupt save data and even the rom on both cartridge and emulator.

Pokémon Yellow

MissingNo and other glitched Pokémon can corrupt save data and even the rom on both cartridge and emulator.

Pokémon X

Version 1.0 only - Saving in the north or south boulevards of Lumiose City and reloading the game can cause it to permanently freeze. (this was fixed through updates)

Pokémon Y

Version 1.0 only - Saving in the north or south boulevards of Lumiose City and reloading the game can cause it to permanently freeze. (this was fixed through updates)

43

Pool of Radiance: Ruins of Myth Drannor

Earlier printings of the PC version only - Uninstalling the game also uninstalled system files (this was fixed in later printings)

RoboCop (1988)

Commodore 64 version only - level 3 has a timer that is too short to complete the level. This was done on purpose because the developers didn't have enough time to fix a graphical glitch on level 4. The level can only be accessed through a glitch.

45

Simon the Sorcerer 3D

At a point in the game, the player is expected to eject the disc for the game and put in a different one. This is impossible on the Steam version because the player does not have a physical copy. Additionally, some disc drives have a different signal which is sent when the disc drive is open, meaning that the game may not recognise the signal even if the disc is inserted.

Smash T.V.

Early arcade releases only - Early arcade releases of the game did not contain the final bonus level, making completion impossible. (the level was added in later releases)

Sonic Adventure 2

Early prints of the Dreamcast version only - The final stage is missing collision detection for one of the floors, resulting in the player infinitely falling. (this was fixed in later printings)

Soulcalibur III

PS2 version - If you delete any save data on your memory card that was made before the Soul Calibur III save, your save data for Soul Calibur III will be corrupted the next time you save your game.

Space Station Silicon Valley

Technically not game breaking, just 100% breaking. - One of the collectibles lacks to collision to collect it, causing 100% completion to be impossible to obtain without cheating.

Sphinx and the Cursed Mummy

2003 NTSC console releases - Saving in the dungeon and reloading will cause the door to the next room to permanently close, halting progress. (this was fixed in later printings and releases - including the 2004 PAL console releases)

Spider-Man (2000)

PC version - Playing the game with a framerate over 20fps causes the player to die during certain cutscenes, causing an infinite loop. While some of the cutscenes are skippable, others are not. This can be fixed by editing the files to set a frame cap.

Star Fox 64

After defeating Star Wolf on Hard Venom, if the ship isn’t the correct distance or angle from the tunnel, Star Fox will just circle around the tunnel, softlocking the game (since there are no save files you will have to restart from the beginning).

Super Mario Bros. 3

NES version - Dying on the World 5 airship will sometimes cause it to go out of bounds, making it unreachable if you don't have the anchor item. (this was fixed in later versions, however some people have reported it happening on the SNES version)

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate

Using specific micro SD cards can cause save data to corrupt if you:
- Play as Piranha Plant in All-Star Mode
- Use Wild Gunman (Duck Hunt Duo's down special) against Gale Stab (one of the Mii Swordfighter's side specials)

Tokyo Xtreme Racer 3

North American version only - One of the races requires players to have 100,000,000 CR when the limit is 99,999,990 CR. This race is needed to be beaten to complete the game. This can be fixed through cheat devices and fan patches. This does not occur on the Japanese version of the game.

True Crime: New York City

Xbox version - A bug caused one of the bosses to have too small of a window for one of the inputs to win, causing the fight to become unbeatable.
