Picross 3D: Round 2

Rainbow jewels on all hard difficulty puzzles. Simply amazing game - outstanding music, fun gameplay. Round 3, please!!!

Metroid Prime Remastered

A fantastic remaster - I'm surprised I remembered every item location. I think knowing the optimal route shows that there are two particular legs of this game that are a little heavy on backtracking, but it's otherwise a masterpiece.

Pikmin 4

A really solid Pikmin entry - although I think the end game grind to complete all the quests is a little unrewarding.

Metroid Dread

One of the best 2D Metroid games (although, they are all fantastic). The controls in this feel so snappy, EXCEPT the shinespark which is awkward on the thumbstick. The combat can be difficult. The world design is nothing short of genius, and probably the best designed Metroidvania map.

Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga + Bowser's Minions

A great remake of a childhood classic. It does have a few moments that drag in the middle, with obtuse puzzles (particularly the pirate ship), but it's so charming, funny and cute. The new game mode is worthless, but you don't need to play it.

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe

Amazing track designs, extremely tight controls - Nintendo really perfected the formula here.

Portal 2

A masterclass in puzzle design. The single player is really fun, but having a few drinks and dipping into the multiplayer is probably one of my favourite gaming experiences this year.

Tinykin

This is a really great game - incredibly easy, but so fun to sink your teeth into. I think it could have been elevated by any kind of combat, but it's still great.

We Love Katamari Reroll + Royal Reverie

It's some mindless fun. The music is cool and the visual aesthetic is interesting. I played with simple controls - I found the usual controls to be a little anti-intuitive. Loved it!

Pokémon Alpha Sapphire

It's a really nice remake of a classic I grew up with. A lot of people rightfully point out that it omitted some changes that Emerald made, but that didn't really ruin the experience for me. Final Team: Sceptile (Mega), Mightyena, Ninjask, Manectric (Mega), Camerupt (Mega), Seviper, Milotic, Castform, Banette (Mega), Glalie (Mega), Latias (Mega), Kyogre (Primal)
